๐ Know Your Rights as a Tenant
Whether you're a first-time renter or a seasoned pro, understanding your rights protects you. Here are a few things every tenant should know:
โ
Fair Housing โ It's illegal for a landlord to discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, s*x, familial status, or disability. You have the right to be treated equally when applying, renting, or living in a home.
โ
Tenant Selection Criteria โ In Texas, landlords must provide a copy of their written tenant selection criteria (and the grounds for denial) when you request it. Ask before you apply so there are no surprises. (TX Property Code ยง 92.3515)
โ
Reasonable Accommodations โ If you have a disability, you have the right to request reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, or services โ like a service animal or a reserved parking space โ to enjoy your home equally.
โ
Reasonable Modifications โ You may be allowed to modify your unit to meet your needs (like grab bars or a ramp), often at your own cost, with the landlord's permission.
โ
Security Deposits โ Know the terms for your deposit โ how much, what it covers, and how it's returned โ and document the condition of the unit at move-in with photos.
โ
Read Before You Sign โ Always read your lease carefully and ask questions. Know your responsibilities and your landlord's.
Knowledge is power. When in doubt, ask questions and get it in writing. ๐ก
