This week in real estate history--NEVER FORGET 911
A pin issued by NAR after 9/11 commemorated the start of a fund that would become the REALTORS® Relief Foundation.
Twenty-five years ago this week, the seeds of the REALTORS® Relief Foundation were sown. Within hours of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, NAR leaders made a vow: that no one would lose a home as a result of the terrible events of the day. In a short time, REALTORS® raised $8.5 million for a housing fund to help surviving family members with short-term housing assistance. All told, 1,333 families received assistance—and the creation of the foundation followed. Just a few years later, RRF raised about $9 million for victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma—and the vital relief work that came about in the wake of 9/11 continues to make a positive impact. Every penny of the money donated to RRF goes to communities to provide housing-related assistance in the wake of disasters. To date, $53 million has been dispersed to more than 50,000 households recovering from disaster.
