TOWN OF WESTON

The Town of Weston is an attractive suburban town on the perimeter of metropolitan Boston. Incorporated in 1713, the town is located on a rugged upland plateau.

Early Settlers discovered that the amount of useful agricultural land was limited as was the water power potential in the town. But colonists moving in from Watertown in the mid-17th century established scattered farms in Weston & by 1679 a sawmill, several taverns, some doctors & according to the historians, “probably some lawyers”, had settled in Weston.

By the 18th century residents were profiting by the traffic on the Boston Post Road. Taverns of great historic importance were established on the road. The Golden Ball Tavern, built in 1750, still exists in the town.

Unfortunately, commercial stagnation followed the loss of business after the opening of the Worcester Turnpike in 1810 drew commercial traffic from the Boston Post road.

Townspeople turned to boot & shoe making, & the manufacturing of cotton & woolen mill machinery.

By 1870, substantial country estates were being built in Weston by Bostonians, establishing a prosperous residential character for the town.

Farming continued to be a significant support for the local community & an organ factory opened in 1888 which employed some residents.

Weston Aqueduct and Reservoir was built in 1903 & the Hultman Aqueduct followed it in 1938 to bring Quabbin Reservoir water into Boston.

In exchange, Boston residents continued to build homes in Weston, many of them architect designed. Town witnessed a rapid increase in population from 1920 to 1935 & then again after World War II.

Residents are very proud of the school system & handsome homes in quiet, well-kept neighborhoods.

Weston has carefully retained significant open space and maintains over 60 miles of hiking & horseback riding trails, playgrounds, ball fields, golf courses & cross country skiing areas.

In the 1630s, after negotiations with Indian Chiefs Nehoiden and Maugus (whose names are still seen in town today), the first nineteen hardy pioneers paid five pounds of currency and three pounds of corn for the land which would become Wellesley.

At the time, it made up part of a larger town, named Dedham.

The land was good and within 75 years enough families were living in a section of Dedham so that a new town split off, named Needham.

The western part of this new town, the part which was to become Wellesley, was called West Needham, and spent most of the 18th and 19th centuries as a small, quiet farming town. Men from West Needham joined their neighbors to fight and die at the beginning of the Revolutionary War at Concord on April 18, 1775, and at Gettysburg less than a century later.

Through the foresight of town fathers who in 1914 made Wellesley the first town in America to adopt zoning laws, Wellesley grew into a beautiful town. By the 1920s it was recognized as one of the leading suburbs of Boston, becoming a center for shopping when Filene’s department store opened its first branch.

The affluence and prosperity of the 20th century have left their mark on Wellesley, which has become a well-regarded suburb featuring a school system recognized as one of the best in the state. Although the town has always had the finest of beautiful land and homes, of schools and colleges, and every advantage of government, there are many who feel that her greatest resource has been her people.
