In late August, the Penn Wharton budget model showed former President Trump’s fiscal policies running up the debt by an added $4.1 trillion through 2034, and VP Harris by -$2 trillion. Since then, it’s gotten worse. According to the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the proposed added spending and tax cuts by the candidates now shows Trump worsening the debt by $7.5 trillion, Harris by $3.5 trillion. OMG!

August existing home sales came in at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 3.86 million. This is down 2.5% M-o-M, 4.2% Y-o-Y, and marks the 36th straight month of year-over-year sales declines. August is the third straight month of sub-4 million sales, a level rarely seen. Sales are scraping all-time lows. With inventory at 4.2 months, up from 3.3 Y-o-Y, and rates down 110bps Y-o-Y, further sales deterioration is over.

In a move largely unexpected just days ago, the Fed cut the Fed funds rate by 50bps! This is an overt acknowledgement that the inflation battle is over, and that rising unemployment is now public enemy #1. While the Fed should have cut earlier, that doesn’t detract from this gutsy call. Fed policymakers expect rates to bottom at 2.875% in 2026. That’s probably too high. Pre-Covid the rate was 1.5%.

While economists struggle to agree on many policies, there are some they coalesce around. When asked if giving the President more direct influence over monetary policy would lead to substantially worse monetary policy decisions, 94% agreed. Similarly, 95% agreed that imposing tariffs results in significant price increases in tariffed goods, borne by consumers of the imposing country. Lastly, 83% don’t believe price gouging is the cause of high food prices.

This past Wednesday, former senator Joseph Lieberman died; he was 82. His political career began in the Connecticut state house in 1970. In 1988, won election to the US Senate, becoming the first Orthodox Jew in the chamber. He then became the first Jewish candidate on a national ticket of a major political party when VP Al Gore selected him to be his running mate in 2000.

The FDA approved a new treatment from pharmaceutical giant Merck for pulmonary arterial hypertension, and it’s considered by the FDA to be the first medicine of its kind to treat the disease. PAH causes the blood vessels in the lungs to progressively shrink, increasing both blood pressure and the risk of heart failure, and in a clinical trial, the drug reduced the risk of death or increased severity of the disease by 83%.
