Things I pay attention about the ring that are not just the footing 🌴☀️
Footing is the first question. It shouldn’t be the only one.

The size and shape decide what you can actually ride. A ring you can split in two gives you gymnastics and a course without rebuilding anything.

The approach sets the tone. Hacking to the ring is a different day than walking out a barn door.

The light decides when you ride. Shade in the late afternoon is worth more than most people realize.

The sound decides how the horse works. Road proximity, hedging, what sits between the arena and the traffic.

And the horses nearby. Turnout beside the ring keeps them watching. Good preparation, not a problem.

A ring at home is not a show ring. It shouldn’t be.

Three things you only learn by living a season here.
I’ve seen Wellington from every angle - the barn aisle at 4am, the grooming stall at the Olympics, and now the closing table. And the thing that never changes: this town runs on horses and reputation, in that order.
Number one is the hill I’ll defend forever. These horses see more specialists than most CEOs.
