That's a fun one! The White Elephant Gift Exchange (also known as a Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa) is a popular party game, typically held around the holidays, that focuses more on entertainment and lighthearted competition than on getting a genuinely valuable item.1
The term "white elephant" itself refers to a possession that is costly to maintain but yields little benefit—a joke or impractical gift is often encouraged!2
Here is a breakdown of how it works:
________________________________________
🐘 The White Elephant Rules
1. 🎁 The Gifts
• Each participant brings one wrapped, anonymous gift to contribute to a common pile.3
• The host typically sets a spending limit (e.g., $10-$25) to keep the gifts similar in value.4
• The gifts are usually amusing, impractical, weird, or silly, though sometimes a genuinely good or desirable item is included to spice up the stealing.5
2. 🔢 Determining the Order
• Players draw numbers (or straws, cards, etc.) to determine the order in which they will take their turns.6
3. ▶️ Gameplay - Taking Turns
The game proceeds in numerical order:
• Player 1 starts by selecting a wrapped gift from the pile, opening it, and showing it to everyone.7 Their turn ends.
• Subsequent Players (Player 2, 3, etc.) have a choice when their turn comes up:
o Option A: Unwrap a new gift. They choose a wrapped gift from the pile, open it, and display it.8 Their turn ends.9
o Option B: Steal an opened gift.10 They take any unwrapped gift from a previous player.11
4. 🔄 Stealing and Swapping
• If a player's gift is stolen, that player's turn is immediately reactivated. They now have the same two choices:
o Unwrap a new gift from the remaining pile.12
o Steal a different opened gift from any other player (except the one who just stole from them—often a rule to keep the game moving).13
• This continues until someone chooses to unwrap a new gift, at which point the turn ends and moves on to the next numbered player.
5. 🛑 Stealing Limits (Common Variation)
• To prevent one highly sought-after gift from being passed around endlessly, most games employ a "limit" rule.14 A common rule is:
o A gift can only be stolen a maximum of three times in total.15 Once it reaches the third steal, it is "frozen" or "out of play," and the current holder gets to keep it permanently.16
o A gift can only be stolen once per turn/round (meaning the person who just got their gift stolen cannot immediately steal it back).17
6. 🏁 The Final Turn
• Once the last wrapped gift is opened by the final player, the game is almost over.
• The first player (Player 1)—who never had the chance to steal—gets a final, bonus turn.18 They can either keep the gift they have or steal any other opened gift (even a frozen one, depending on the host's rules).19
• If Player 1 steals, the person whose gift was stolen can then steal from anyone else (following the stealing rules) or keep their new gift.20
• The game officially ends when a player chooses not to steal, or when there are no more eligible gifts to steal.21
The goal is to have a good time and see what silly or surprisingly desirable item you end up with!
