Another surge of arctic air is expected in our region Saturday through Tuesday, with temperatures dropping into the single digits and low teens. During extreme cold periods, energy usage often increases as heating systems work harder to keep homes comfortable. Here are DUKE Energy Tips to Save!
*Adjust or program your thermostat: The best setting is the lowest temperature at which your family is comfortable. Heading out for a few hours? Adjust your thermostat a couple degrees down.
Manage water heating: Set your water heater to 120 degrees. Water heating is typically the second-biggest user of energy in your home.
*Check windows, doors and vents for air leaks: Caulking, sealing and weatherstripping leaks can save 10% to 20% in heating costs.
*Fuller loads, better savings: Run only full loads in the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. Partial loads use more water and energy.
*Unplug electronics not in use: Even when they are not switched to the "on" position, electronics such as TVs, laptops, cellphones, chargers and even coffee makers slowly drain electricity. Unplug these devices when you’re not using them.
