Tomorrow is the first official day of winter! Celebrate the chilly season with John Ellsworth Weis’s December.

In December, two young boys trudge down a snowy street perhaps after a long day of sledding. Weis’s weighty brushstrokes and bright white highlights denote the snow’s depth as well as its heavily trodden surface. The artist characterized the style of this straightforward, broadly brushed composition as “honest.”

The street in December is reminiscent of Weis’s native . Friends of the artist noted that he immersed himself in his surroundings and marveled at the beauty of everyday scenes. At his death, they said simply, “He was and is what we see in his paintings.”
