A staff presentation scheduled for the March 24 meeting of the West Hollywood Planning Commission's Design Review Subcommittee reveals plans from EAH for a new affordable and supportive housing development, which would rise from a vacant lot at the intersection of Detroit Street and Lexington Avenue. Plans call for the construction of a five-story edifice featuring 48 residential units above parking for 21 vehicles. The apartments, which would consist of studio units ranging from 405 to 448 square feet in size, are to be accompanied by social services offices, a community room, and a corner garden at street level.

LAVO, as a restaurant brand, has certainly had an unusual trajectory. Indeed, it debuted at the Palazzo Las Vegas in 2008, with celeb chef Ludo Lefebvre at the helm, before sprouting a much buzzed about outpost in New York in 2010, near to The Plaza hotel, at the southernmost end of the Madison Avenue luxury corridor. Typically, as we’ve come to know, already successful NYC restaurants will later open outposts in Vegas, rather than the other way around.

Singapore followed in 2017, and now comes Los Angeles, with the new LAVO Ristorante taking up residence along the Western edge of West Hollywood, at the intersection of Sunset and Doheny (just up the road from the EDITION hotel). Of course, Angelenos love their splashy Italian restaurants – chi SPACCA, Viale dei Romani, Osteria Mozza – and here they will get to enjoy digging into creative coastal cuisine in impressively lavish surrounds meant to evoke a plush villa in the south of Italy (Perhaps Portofino? Palermo?).

A piece of history will transition into a multi-use project starting next year. The iconic Viper Room — opened by Johnny Depp and former actor Sal Jenco in 1993 — will become a 12-story high rise, and construction begins next year.

Deadline reports the LA-based firm Silver Creek Development will turn 8852 W. Sunset Boulevard into a residential building with restaurants, cafes, a luxury hotel, music venue, and recording studio with original Viper Room memorabilia featured throughout the building.

The federal government has $8 billion to spend to kick-start construction of the first ​“clean hydrogen hubs” in the U.S. — and competition for that funding is heating up. At congressional hearings this month, a number of senators and representatives from both parties pitched their home states as the ideal sites.

But questions are mounting about how to choose the best locations for centralizing production, storage and delivery of hydrogen as a low-carbon replacement for fossil fuels — and what qualifies a hydrogen production hub as ​“clean” in the first place.

The City Council voted 4-1 on Feb. 22 to deny an appeal that challenged the city’s Planning Commission’s approval of a co-living project at the corner of Fairfax and Fountain avenues.

According to a staff report, the developers, FF1 LLC, modified the project to include 14 market-rate co-living units with a total of 79 bedrooms. Three four-bedroom units would be affordable housing.

Each bedroom would have a private bathroom, but units would share a kitchen and living, dining and laundry areas in the five-story building, the staff report states.

So is it any wonder that in 2022—our third consecutive year in a global pandemic—the top interior design trends are again focused on making us feel emotionally at ease?

“We have been forced to slow down and spend time in our homes—this drives a strong desire to really create a space that reflects both visually and affectionately what it is we are feeling. As of lately we are paying close attention to how design has the ability to create an energy,” says Erick Garcia of the Los Angeles-based design firm Maison Trouvaille. “This all excites me very much—allowing the senses to drive a space.”
