Because there’s a lot more to it than putting a tripod in the ground!

Before you receive your completed survey, there’s work happening both in the field and behind the scenes:

📚 Researching property records and previous surveys
📍 Completing field measurements and locating evidence
📐 Reviewing data and performing calculations
🔎 Comparing and resolving boundary evidence
🗺️ Preparing the final survey or plat

Every property has its own history—and sometimes, figuring out that history takes a little detective work.

That’s a common misconception!

Online county assessor and parcel maps are great reference tools, but they are not the same thing as a land survey. The lines you see online may be approximate and aren’t intended to establish the exact location of your legal property boundaries.

A professional land survey uses records, field measurements, existing monuments, and other evidence to determine your property boundaries.

The answer: Thousands of years! 🤯

Land surveying is one of the world’s oldest professions, with evidence of surveying practices dating back to ancient Egypt more than 4,000 years ago. Surveyors helped establish property boundaries, measure land, and lay out major construction projects.

The technology may have changed quite a bit since then—but the goal is still the same: accurately measuring the land beneath our feet.
