Pretty neat find yesterday. The highway route plans show a "stone", at the closing corner of Sections 1 and 2. In my preliminary work, I "assumed" the stone had been removed when the road was constructed (this is a secondary lettered highway in Douglas County).

I located right-of-way markers and calculated the position of the stone using stationing and measurements listed on the plans. When we went to set a rebar at the corner position, the rod tip "clunked" on something hard and unmovable. When we dug up the "clunk" - Lo and Behold, there was the stone!

The stone had old yellow MoDOT paint on it and was approximately 6" square. This stone was also referenced in a USFS "yellow sheet".

This was a good reminder for me to "never assume".

This is a pretty typical old corner that we find in areas that were historically pine forests - A pine knot in a rock pile. This one has been previously visited by a surveyor that placed a 60D nail beside the pine knot.

A pine knot (pine lighter, fatwood) is what remains of a pine tree when it rots away. Per AI it is "a resin-soaked, highly flammable piece of wood found where a dead pine branch once connected to the trunk". It is very durable as a memorial in a pile of stones.

This one was found at a property corner near Van Buren Missouri. Shown in the picture is our crew, Parker French and Cole Matthews.

Flintstone set by County Surveyor Wade Heiskell in 1897. Found the stump hole of the GLO white oak (1821), northeast. Position: 1/4 corner common to S34/S35, T22N, R5W.

46 years ago (and as many pounds ago) I was using a transit and babbet tape. Now I’m using state of the art GPS but the fundamentals are still the same. I don’t move as fast as I used to, and the hills are much steeper, but I’ve been blessed to practice a profession that has provided a sufficient living and I look forward to going to work every day.

Serving as the Howell County Surveyor for 32 years I have had the opportunity to retrace hundreds of Mr. Eno’s surveys. Charles W. Eno was from New York and served as county surveyor in the early 1900’s. He and his wife are buried in Onandoga County., New York.

For quite a while, Riggs Brothers Surveying, LLC has been needing a logo. But not just any logo... We needed something unique to our small, hometown, family business.

My brother Ralph and I, evidently look a lot alike. He is 6 ft 6" tall and I am 6 ft 5" tall. Both of us wear glasses and since we are older, we both have about the same build. The difference is, when we are out and about, I always wear a cowboy hat and he wears a ball cap. So... What better way to make a logo than to use that difference! Tell us what you think of our new logo.
