Central Iowa is beginning to feel a little more like fall. 🍂

The week starts cool and damp, with temperatures dipping into the 40s Tuesday morning. But if the forecast holds, Saturday may bring sunshine and a beautiful high near 68°.

That sounds like pumpkin-patch weather to us.

Whether your family loves the excitement of Center Grove Orchard, the relaxed farm atmosphere at Wills Family Orchard or a stop at Iowa Orchard, these simple fall outings often become the memories we treasure most.

The cider donuts. The muddy little boots. The annual pumpkin photo. The children who somehow look a little taller than they did last fall.

I’m taking in the quiet before our family celebration and the joyful chaos begins.

Soon, the house will be filled with laughter, fabulous food, stories, and the people we love. Tomorrow, everyone will return to their own homes, responsibilities, and busy lives. It may be months before we are all together again.

As our children, nieces, and nephews grow up and build lives of their own, gathering everyone under one roof becomes more difficult and more meaningful.

Long ago, I promised my Mom I would help keep our family connected by creating a home where everyone could gather, celebrate, and make memories. Watching that promise unfold has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

Perhaps that is why I have always believed a home is so much more than an address. It is where people return, where relationships are strengthened, and where ordinary moments become the memories we carry with us.

The house may be quiet again tomorrow. Today, it will be full, and so will my heart.

Hot Rods for Heroes is happening today at DMACC Ankeny!

This is more than a car show. Every registration and purchase supports the Blue Star Mothers of Iowa 2026 care-package project for Iowa troops serving overseas.

As a Blue Star Mother, this mission is personal to me. Every box carries more than supplies. It reminds a service member that they are remembered, appreciated and supported from home.

Event details:

• Saturday, September 19
• 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
• DMACC Ankeny, Lot L
• Vehicle registration: 9:00 AM to noon
• Judging: Noon to 1:30 PM
• $20 onsite vehicle registration
• Open to the public and family-friendly

Come enjoy classic cars, door prizes, a silent auction and a bags tournament while supporting those serving far from home.

This week marked 79 years since the United States Air Force became an independent military service on September 18, 1947.

Airpower is about far more than aircraft and pilots. Every mission depends on maintainers, boom operators, medical teams, security forces, cyber specialists, intelligence professionals, logistics teams and many others working together.

That mission is carried by Active Duty Airmen, the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve.

Here in Iowa, our Citizen-Airmen serve through two Air National Guard wings:

• The 132d Wing in Des Moines supports MQ-9 operations, intelligence, targeting, cyber, logistics, communications and medical missions.

• The 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City operates the KC-135 aerial-refueling mission.

Behind every Airman is also a family carrying the deployments, night shifts, missed milestones, PCS moves and uncertainty.

To our Airmen, veterans and military families: Happy 79th birthday. Your service is honored and appreciated.

Some observances ask us to celebrate. This one asks us to pause.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the service members who endured captivity, those who returned home, those who remain missing and the families who have carried unanswered questions across generations.

Their waiting did not end when a conflict ended. Their hope did not disappear when the years passed.

Today, teams continue investigating cases, conducting recovery missions and working to identify missing service members so they may finally be returned to their families.

We remember those who came home.

We remember those who have not.

We stand beside the families who never stopped waiting.

You are not forgotten.

We the People ….

September 17 is Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787.

For military families, this document carries another meaning.

Our enlisted service members and commissioned officers take different oaths, but both begin with the same commitment:

“I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Enlisted members also promise to obey the orders of the President and appointed officers according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Commissioned officers promise to faithfully discharge the duties of their office.

The wording matters. The Constitution is not simply part of our history. It remains the framework our service members swear to support and defend.

Today, we honor that promise and the service members, veterans and military families who carry it.

Today is American Legion Day, recognizing the organization’s federal charter on September 16, 1919.

For more than a century, the American Legion has continued serving through four pillars: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youth.

Local posts turn that mission into action by helping with veterans’ benefits, conducting Buddy Checks, providing honor guards, supporting military families, awarding scholarships and strengthening their communities.

Through Be the One, Legion members also encourage us to listen, reach out and help reduce veteran su***de.

Your VA home loan benefit may offer more flexibility and long-term value than you realize.

It is a lifetime benefit that may be used more than once. VA loans do not require monthly PMI or MIP, certain borrowers may be exempt from the VA funding fee, and an existing VA loan may be assumable when the new borrower qualifies.

Many of us first knew Michael J. Fox as the young actor who made us laugh. Tonight, he was honored for something much larger than his work on screen.

Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at just 29 years old. After publicly sharing his diagnosis in 1998, he turned one of the most frightening chapters of his life into a mission to help millions of others.

Tonight, he explained that decision in one powerful sentence:

“I understood that accepting Parkinson’s didn’t mean I had to surrender to it.”

Since founding The Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, the organization has funded $3 billion in Parkinson’s research. Today, 180 promising therapies are in or entering human testing.

Michael also has a meaningful military connection. His father served approximately 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and Michael grew up moving between military communities.

That makes the name of this honor especially meaningful.

Bob Hope spent five decades showing up for America’s service members, completing 57 USO tours from World War II through the Gulf War. Michael reflected on that example during his speech:

“Bob Hope showed up for the troops.”

“I learned from his example.”

Perhaps the most emotional moment came when Michael thanked Tracy and their children for the sacrifices, patience and love they have given throughout this journey. His words recognized something families facing illness understand deeply: No one carries a difficult diagnosis entirely alone.

Service takes many forms. Bob Hope brought laughter to those serving far from home. Michael J. Fox continues bringing hope to families affected by Parkinson’s disease.

Both remind us that what matters is not simply the platform we are given. It is how we use it to help others.

Congratulations, Michael J. Fox. This honor is so well deserved.
