UPDATE - 1/10/24: Please be aware that there is a road closure in the area of 280 Wheeler Rd due to a tree on wires. Eversource is on scene.

Various low-lying roads are currently flooded with a few inches of water due to high tide. We expect that to recede within the next few hours. Thank you.

1/9/24: Yet another storm will impact our area tonight.

The Stonington Emergency Management Team remains in communication with all town departments and first responders. With the possibility of 3+ inches of rain falling over the course of 12 hours basement flooding is a real concern with the already saturated soil. This storm will be very similar to the one we experienced right before Christmas and we could see winds gusts to 60mph during the overnight hours. We may also see some minor impacts from coastal flooding at high tide during the early morning hours tomorrow. While this storm may not have significant townwide impacts it is yet another reminder to prepare early. There are two additional storm systems that have the potential to impact our area over the course of the next week or so.

With that being said this is a good time to review some quick tips:

• If you go outside to inspect any wind related damage, be aware of your surroundings and the possibility of downed wires. These wires, especially at night are extremely difficult to see.
• Do not enter flooded roadways.
• Prepare early for the possibility of basement flooding.
• Make sure cell phones and other devices are charged ahead of the storm.
• Check snow blowers and generators to make sure they are operational.
• Make sure you have food and other medications on hand in advance of storms.

Stay Safe Stonington!

I spent an hour in the bank with my dad,
as he had to transfer some money. I couldn't resist
myself and asked...
''Dad, why don't we activate your internet banking?''
''Why would I do that?'' He asked...
''Well, then you wont have to spend an hour here for
things like making a transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will
be so easy!''
I was so excited about initiating him into the world of
Net banking.
He asked ''If I do that, I wont have to step out of the
house?”
''Yes, yes''! I said. I told him how even groceries can
be delivered at your door now and how amazon
delivers everything!
His answer left me tongue-tied.
He said ''Since I entered this bank today, I have met
four of my friends, I have chatted awhile with the staff
who know me very well by now.
You know, I am alone...this is the company that I need.
I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have
enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.
Two years back, I got sick. The store owner from whom
I buy fruits, came to see me and sat by my bedside
and cried.
When your Mom fell down a few days back while on
her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and
immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows
where I live.
Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became
online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me and force
me to interact with just my computer?
I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not
just the 'seller'. It creates bonds of Relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?'''
Technology isn't life..
Spend time with people .. Not with devices.

A low flying helicopter will be in our area in the next few weeks. They will be starting in Lyme, CT and will progress eastward finishing in Stonington.

Whiteout Solutions, contracted by Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, will be conducting aerial surveys of all protected coastal saltmarshes in the state of Connecticut. The data from these surveys will establish a high-resolution elevation dataset that will be used to measure change to these critical ecosystems over the coming years and decades. The surveys will also map key vegetation species at each of the sites. The data will also be used to further refine the CT SLAMM (Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model) which will help communities plan, manage, adapt and conserve areas that will be most impacted by climate change.
