Today I received a call that I've been expecting, but dreading.
A past client called to ask for help. His brother in law was picked up by ICE last month, and despite having a valid work permit through 2028, is facing deportation. The program that his family entered the United States under was canceled by the Trump administration, rendering his path to citizenship invalid. Now his wife will need to sell their home, and figure out how to move on with life with two small children.
I ask you to put yourself in their shoes. To do things "the right way" and have the rug pulled out from underneath you. To believe in a dream and have it taken away.
This is not the America that has always welcomed the poor, tired and huddled masses. This is an America that feeds a for-profit prison machine. I will continue to use my platform, however small, to talk about these people who have had a real and meaningful impact in my life. I love what I do and usually it is the most inspiring and fun job that I think someone can have. But some days, like today, feel like a kick to the gut and leave me feeling an inexplicable helplessness for people that I care about.
