Growing up, very few people are taught how to manage their finances. Unsurprisingly, this results in many individuals or couples mismanaging their money as they grow older. Society also encourages poor financial decisions, so making the jump from being financially irresponsible to financially responsible isn’t even a thought that crosses your mind. “Living your wage” isn’t cool either apparently. I am fascinated by the number of people who never take the time to educate themselves on the topic of personal finances, and that is one of the reasons I switched my degree from Chemical Engineering to Finance. It’s to one day to be in a professional position to educate and advise clients, human beings, on what to do with their money. A quick lesson I can tell you from a short Instagram post is to stop throwing your money away paying off someone else’s mortgage when you could be doing that for yourself, and as a byproduct build equity in a property that you own. I understand that not everyone is in a position to be purchasing a home today, but it should be an immediate goal and focus. Renting should be an intermediate phase and not the end goal. You owe it to yourself to get educated on this topic or reach out to someone like me that can help.
