Before listing a home, one of the most valuable steps isn’t remodeling or spending thousands on upgrades. It’s creating space for buyers to imagine their own life there.

Here are 10 things I recommend sellers remove before listing:

1️⃣ Family photos – Give buyers a chance to picture their own family in the home.

2️⃣ About 40% of what’s in your closets – A packed closet can make storage feel limited. Store seasonal or rarely used items elsewhere.

3️⃣ Countertop clutter – Nearly bare kitchen and bathroom counters make spaces feel cleaner, larger, and more inviting.

4️⃣ Extra furniture – Too much furniture can make rooms feel smaller. When in doubt, take one piece out.

5️⃣ Everything on the refrigerator – Magnets, school papers, photos, and artwork can make listing photos look cluttered.

6️⃣ Bold or highly personal décor – Specific styles or décor can distract buyers from seeing the home itself.

7️⃣ Pet evidence – Put away bowls, beds, crates, and litter boxes before showings. And don’t underestimate the importance of a fresh-smelling home.
