Sometimes even modern technology comes down to moving sand. ⚓️
This is the USAV Yaquina, a specialized dredge operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Its job is surprisingly straightforward: remove built-up sand and sediment from navigation channels, entrance bars and harbors so commercial and recreational vessels can pass safely.
The Yaquina has been doing this work since 1981 and routinely works around Grays Harbor and Westport.
There’s something fascinating about that to me. The technology may change, but the Pacific keeps moving sand—and somebody still has to move it back.
Another thing I didn’t know about Westport.
