Kitch-iti-kipi is great if your looking for a unique spot to explore.
If you’ve never floated across 40 feet of crystal-clear, emerald water while giant trout glide beneath your feet… add this to your Michigan bucket list immediately.
At Kitch-iti-kipi, more than 10,000 gallons of water bubble up every single minute from limestone fissures below — and it never freezes. Ever. The water stays a steady 45 degrees year-round.
The spring is about 200 feet across, and the sandy bottom is constantly shifting as water pushes upward from underground caves. Ancient tree trunks, lime-coated logs, and massive trout are all visible from the surface thanks to water so clear you can spot coins 40 feet down.
The best part? You cross it on a self-operated observation raft pulled along a cable. Someone turns the giant wheel, everyone takes turns, and you glide silently over what the Ojibwe once called the “Mirror of Heaven.”
It’s peaceful. It’s surreal. And it’s one of the most unique natural wonders in the entire Upper Peninsula.
