Using the house to pay off a loved one's debts isn't a failure. Often, it's the plan.
When someone passes, the estate has to deal with what they owed, and sometimes the sale of the home is exactly what covers it. That's a completely normal part of settling an estate, nothing to be embarrassed about. What matters is doing things in the right sequence: get the legal authority to act, handle the debts, and then the sale can move forward like any other.
