The 2024 Wright & Like Tour will be in Racine in September - with a great lineup of architects!

SAVE THE DATE! Our annual architectural tour, Wright and Like, is scheduled for Saturday, September 7th, in Racine, Wisconsin. We currently have 6 private residences on the tour (designed by architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Ken Dahlin, Hans Geyer, John Randal McDonald, and Edgar Tafel) along with the S. C. Johnson campus (Administration Building (FLW), Research Tower (FLW), & Fortaleza Hall (Norman Foster)).

We also are planning a Friday night event for September 6th at the Racine Heritage Museum. Chicago's cultural historian emeritus Tim Samuelson will speak on the Museum's "Wright Before the Lloyd" exhibit.

It’s a sad day for Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Wisconsin. One of my favorite googie MCM buildings has just been torn down. This Phillips gas station was built circa 1966 on the corner of Port Washington Rd and Calumet Rd in Glendale, WI. Architect Clarence F Reinhardt’s iconic design was used throughout the US post-WWII.

One of the old Kohl’s Food Stores here in Wisconsin has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Well done!

Congratulations to the Kohl’s Food Store in Monona, Dane County for recently being added to the National Register of Historic Places!

Kohl’s Food Store was constructed in 1968 following a design by the Milwaukee firm of Rasche, Schroeder, Spransy & Associates. The building is an excellent representative of mid-century Contemporary architecture that utilizes glue-laminated arches to achieve its distinctive arched roof without the use of interior columns or other vertical supports. The building represents the signature design employed by Kohl’s Food Stores throughout the 1950s and 1960s and is one of the best remaining examples of the company’s standardized supermarket design remaining in the state.

Furthermore, the building is one of the most visible and distinctive examples of glue-laminated arch construction in the City of Monona. In addition to its signature arched roof, the building is characterized by an asymmetrical façade; front window-wall with a continuous, widely overhanging eave; prominent glue-laminated front arch that extends beyond the roofline to ground anchors on each side; projecting flat roof over the front entrance; and interior floor plan featuring a large, open sales floor. The building operated as a supermarket until ownership changes and the construction of additional supermarkets in the area led to its closure in 1985. In 2014, the building was purchased by Habitat for Humanity of Dane County and it currently serves as one of two Habitat ReStore of Dane County.

The National Register is the official list of historic properties in America deemed worthy of preservation and is maintained by the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Wisconsin Historical Society administers the program within Wisconsin.
