How cool is this?!?! One of the central figures in the history of our resort, Toni Matt, received a posthumous Guinness World Record earlier this month🥇🎉
The record is for the fastest race time down the legendary Tuckerman Ravine off Mt Washington in central New Hampshire. The race, called the Mount Washington “Inferno”, was a 4-mile long descent of the famed ravine complete with gates, tight tracks, natural terrain obstacles, and much more. Matt obliterated the competition, clocking a time of 6:29:20. The record breaking race was held on April 16th, 1939.
Matt helped the founders of our resort, Ed Schenk and George Prentice, grow the credibility of skiing in Whitefish by taking over the ski school and designing race courses for competition. Matt first arrived on Big Mountain in 1948 and taught here until a racing crash forced an early retirement from skiing professionally. The Matt family left Whitefish in 1956 to return to the east coast and begin a quieter life after the crash.
Toni is memorialized as the namesake of our Toni-Matt ski run, one of the main groomers down the frontside of Big Mountain. Congrats to Toni and the rest of the Matt family 🏆
