𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧: Sherman Funmaker, poet and musician, designer and teacher, son and brother, shares his life story in his intensely personal debut, “Bear Tracks: Memories of a Ho-Chunk Elder.”

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? The first practical typewriter was invented in Milwaukee!

On Feb. 14, 1819, C. Latham Sholes, the inventor of the modern typewriter, was born. Though originally from Pennsylvania, Sholes moved to Wisconsin as a child and later lived in Green Bay, Kenosha, and Milwaukee.

Working alongside fellow inventors in a small Milwaukee machine shop, Sholes spent nearly seven years perfecting his design. In 1874, his model became the world’s first practical typewriter to be mass-produced.

After years of refinement to the original 1867 design, Sholes’s old colleague James Densmore invested the funding needed to bring the machine to market, convincing E. Re*****on & Sons of Ilion, New York, to manufacture it. With a few final improvements, the Re*****ons produced the model shown here later donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1915 by Sholes’s son, Fred.

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁: The familiar “QWERTY” keyboard layout still used today debuted on the very first Sholes & Glidden machines. There was no shift key because the original models typed only in capital letters.

A day we celebrate all the things we love about the Badger State!

Wisconsin is rich in glacial landscapes, featuring drumlins, eskers, till plains, marshes, and moraines. One of the most striking examples is the Kettle Moraine area in southeastern Wisconsin, a lasting reminder of the glaciers that shaped the state. Meanwhile, roughly 15,000 square miles, mostly in southwestern Wisconsin, remained untouched by glaciers, forming what we now know as the Driftless Area.
