Original bond plan for new southeast quadrant high and K-8 schools
The Wichita Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony
for the new Southeast High School on September 29, 2014.
The new Southeast High School, located at 2641 S. 127th St. East, is divided into four main areas: a two-story academic area, a two-story technology plaza area, a fine arts area and a PE/athletic area. The school features a secure main entrance, a “main street” hallway concept to allow easy access from one side of the school to the other, a 900-seat auditorium and fine arts suite, a library with seating for 100 students. A two-story classroom pod will be one of the school’s two storm shelters. There will be enclosed bridges between the classroom wings on the second level to improve traffic flow.
On the east side of the building, there is a two-story tech plaza where all the career and technical education classrooms are concentrated. The tech ed plaza has its own commons with a satellite serving area to give students another area to gather.
In the P.E./athletics area, there will be a 2,400-seat gymnasium with a walking track, a swimming pool, a 500-seat auxiliary gym and a wrestling room that will serve as a storm shelter. It is designed with extra restrooms and concessions that will serve indoor and outdoor athletic events. There will be tunnels from the locker rooms to the outdoor football field.
The school has several alcoves that will serve as mini-commons areas to give students places to gather during lunch. Energy use concerns have been addressed with natural day lighting and low-e glass windows throughout the school building.
The estimated cost of the entire project is $68 million, including projects covered by capital funding, exterior athletic projects, auditorium and stage items and road improvements.
The school will have outdoor physical education and athletic facilities include a football/soccer field with all-weather turf and track, 8 tennis courts, baseball and softball fields and practice fields. Exterior athletics work were designed by district staff and bid under separate contracts to save on architectural costs. Construction on the exterior athletics will be under a separate schedule.
On June 24, 2013, the Board of Education voted to relocate Southeast High School to a new location at Pawnee and 127th Street East.
