By chance, we met Walter —and he completely changed the trajectory of our visit. Walter shared so many beautiful stories about the culture and how it’s passed down through generations in his family.

I developed my tried + true tips for client appointment success during my time in the hair industry, but they’ve served me well in all business ventures!

Details matter!

And it all begins with: Tapping into the 5 senses

Be mindful of what your client is hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting + touching.

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?

🧏🏻‍♀️HEAR
Playing music that is calm, upbeat, not jarring

👀 SEE
Keeping your workspace tidy + organized

👃🏻SMELL
What is the signature product you use? Using a diffuser to dispense essential oils into the air

🫖TASTE
Offering a beverage or snack

🤗TOUCH
Touching their soft new hair or giving a great scalp massage

And a bonus sensation – FEEL:
This is by far the most important, and is the culmination of what their other 5 senses are picking up!

Boundaries

This has been a difficult one for me
To learn😅 but important

When you break one of your own boundaries, you hurt not only yourself but those around you.

“Boundaries” is an interesting concept that did not come up for me until late in my career.

In the service industry, the answer is always yes, “What can I do for you?”

Which I still believe in, but it is also important to create and maintain boundaries ( your personal rule book)

Figuring out my “boundaries” helped me fine-tune my client list AND helped me create more fun in my work.

🤔 My top rule for setting boundaries on the career front?

Get clear on what sparks your passion for your work.

And now, do your best to bring as much of *that* into your world while pushing away what doesn’t fit.

When a new client or new work request would come in, I’d ask myself if it was breaking my boundaries.

If the answer was yes, then my response was a hard no.

It was a difficult task for myself and my fellow people-pleasers - but a critical one.

And over time, it gets easier to tell when your boundaries are being pushed.

💯 Yes, you might let others down. But you won’t be letting yourself down.

Don't wait for the opportunity to happen.

MAKE it happen!

Last month, I was in Miami doing hair for .

This all fell into place years ago when I worked with and met her best friend . Sara had just come back from New York Fashion Week, and I said to her, “GOALS. I would love to do that!”

Her response? “You should!”

So I did. And then I went to Paris Fashion Week.

When friends recently told me they were going to Miami Swim Week, I declared that I wanted to go and even invited myself to stay with them 😂

The point of all of this? Step out. Insert yourself. It’s the only way to make things happen!

Feeling like you’re in a rut or have lost direction?

✨5 steps I do to tighten up my routine:

✔Wake up early (I personally like 5:30 am!)
✔Write down 3 things you are grateful for (it can be as small as getting up early!)
✔Drink water
✔Make yourself healthy meals
✔Get your heart rate moving - even 10 minutes makes a difference!

In my early days of owning a restaurant, someone gave me this sign as a gift: “Complaint Department ⏩100 miles.”

I am hard on myself by nature, and every complaint (or one that I “hear” as a complaint), every “you should do it this way,” always hits me hard.

I still remember one of my first ass chewings from a couple who felt the need to tell me how terrible I am. From their vantage point, it probably looked like I wasn’t working. What they didn’t know was everything I was doing to make their lunch happen.

But there are 2 things I know for sure:

1️⃣ I will always give my 100%.

2️⃣There will always be people who complain.

If they’re right, I'll fix it. If they’re complaint doesn’t ring true for me, I just have to move on.

Easier said than done for my fellow perfectionists, I know!

Don’t let criticism bog you down. If you’re giving your 100% (which will absolutely change as you grow and have new experiences!), and you’re also willing to acknowledge when you’re not, you’ll have an easier time navigating complaints.

I’ve always noticed that my business success has a direct correlation to what I’ve put into my marketing over the previous 3 months.

It always feels daunting to put stuff out there and not get immediate results - especially on social media.

But we’re playing the long game here! We’re in the trust business.

✔ Give yourself a doable schedule.
✔ Decide how many times a week you’re going to post on social - and stick to it.
✔ Keep it simple. Once you’re in the flow, it gets easier!

A gentle reminder- throw perfection and excuses your mind has made up out the door and just post!
