TODAY IN LOCAL HISTORY: June 29, 1776, the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet was fought off the coast of present-day Wildwood, NewJersey‬. It was the first privateer battle of the American Revolutionary War and an early naval victory for the Continental Navy and Captain John Barry. It is estimated that the British lost 30-40 men while the Americans suffered one dead and one wounded. The American casualty was Lieutenant Richard Wickes. He is buried at Cold Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery. It was the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Cape May County. At that time, Wildwood was split : Two Mile and Five Mile Beach, with Turtle Gut inlet dividing the two. The inlet was artificially filled in 1922. Today, a small park in Wildwood Crest commemorates the battle with a marker.
