Not all agents are Realtors® — and Realtors® have a code of ethics that we take seriously. This NPR article doesn’t present the full story.

Realtors® want to connect our buyers and sellers to what THEY want and need. If a buyer is looking for a $250K property, and that’s their budget, Realtors® will help pair them with that home and work to negotiate the best price, the best deal, possible. On the selling side, the accusation that a Realtor® would try to overprice a home (i.e. the higher the price, the more money the Realtor® makes) is also a half-truth. It’s NOT a fun conversation when a seller wants to over-value a property and list it high “just to see what happens” — and the market doesn’t support that price. We want our clients to win.

The “new” (?) rules that require agents to inform buyers and sellers that fees are negotiable isn’t really new. They’ve ALWAYS been negotiable. BUT, an attorney’s fees, or an accountant’s fees, are also negotiable — and the best won’t discount their rates. Do you really want a discount cardiologist? Or a discount attorney? Or even… a discount Realtor®?

I’m proud to be a Realtor®. Word-of-mouth, my reputation, is everything. THAT, and the code of ethics I agreed to, are my “new” (and old!) rule.

Agents have typically taken a commission on the sale of a home that totals 5% to 6% of the price. But new rules have created an opening for brokers who charge much less.
