Love this placed called H❤️ME!

North Dakota is one of the most isolated, winter-brutal, economically surprising, and criminally underestimated states in the entire United States — and people who live there will casually survive -40°F temperatures while everyone else questions why humans would choose to exist there.

North Dakota feels less like a state and more like a frozen agricultural frontier where the wind never stops, the horizon never ends, and surviving winter becomes a badge of honor. ❄️🌬️💀

The Isolation Is Real

North Dakota is:
- one of the least populated states in the U.S. (fewer than 800,000 people)
- mostly empty space
- hours from any major city
- filled with small towns separated by endless fields
- and the kind of place where "going to town" means driving 45 minutes 🚗🌾

You can drive for miles and see:
- farmland
- more farmland
- a grain elevator
- maybe a cow
- and absolutely zero traffic 🐄😭

The Flatness Is Legendary (But Not Everywhere)

Western North Dakota is flat beyond comprehension:
- endless prairies
- agricultural fields stretching to infinity
- the kind of flatness that makes Kansas look hilly
- horizons so wide you can see the curvature of the Earth (almost) 🌾🌅

But then you hit the Badlands in the west:
- rugged, eroded rock formations
- buttes and canyons
- dramatic, Mars-like terrain
- Theodore Roosevelt National Park (bison, wild horses, stunning views)
- and a landscape that feels like another planet 🏜️🦬

The Weather Is Absolutely Merciless

North Dakota weather operates on pure survival difficulty.

Winter:
- November to April (sometimes longer)
- temperatures regularly hitting -20°F to -40°F
- wind chills that feel like -60°F
- snow measured in feet
- blizzards that shut down highways
- ice everywhere
- and people who still go to work like nothing is wrong ❄️🌬️💀

Spring:
- doesn't exist
- maybe 2 weeks of mud and melting snow
- floods from snowmelt
- then immediately becomes summer 🌸➡️☀️

Summer:
- surprisingly hot (80–95°F)
- perfect blue skies
- long daylight hours
- mosquitoes achieving biblical plague levels
- and everyone trying to emotionally recover from winter ☀️🦟😭

Fall:
- harvest season
- golden fields
- beautiful sunsets
- comfortable temperatures
- then winter returns with zero warning 🍂❄️

The Wind:
North Dakota wind is relentless and violent.
- constant
- powerful
- bone-chilling in winter
- makes every temperature feel 20° colder
- and becomes an eternal background hum 🌬️💀

Agriculture Dominates

North Dakota is an agricultural powerhouse:

- #1 producer of spring wheat, durum wheat, dry edible beans, honey, flaxseed, canola
- massive farms (family operations covering thousands of acres)
- grain elevators towering over every small town
- combines harvesting fields like mechanical armies
- and farming families for generations 🌾🚜🐝

The state also has:
- cattle ranching
- soybeans
- corn
- sunflowers
- and sugar beets 🌻🐄

North Dakota feeds America, and nobody notices.

Oil Changed Everything

In the 2000s, the Bakken Oil Boom transformed western North Dakota:

- thousands of oil workers flooding in
- small towns suddenly booming
- man camps (temporary housing for workers)
- skyrocketing wages
- and previously quiet places becoming industrial hubs 🛢️💰

It brought:
- economic growth
- infrastructure strain
- environmental concerns
- and a wild mix of locals and transient workers 🚧

The boom has slowed, but oil remains a massive part of the economy.

Small Towns Are The Backbone

North Dakota has hundreds of small towns, most with populations under 500.

These towns are:
- centered around grain elevators and churches
- home to local diners, hardware stores, and bars
- places where everyone knows everyone
- aging populations as young people leave for cities
- and time moving slower 🏘️⛪

Driving through North Dakota means:
- passing ghost towns
- seeing abandoned farmhouses
- water towers with town names
- and gas stations that feel like oases 🚗⛽

The People Are Built Different

North Dakotans are:
- tough as hell (surviving -40°F winters requires it)
- friendly and community-oriented
- quiet, no-nonsense, hardworking
- proud of their Norwegian/German heritage (Scandinavian roots run deep)
- and completely unfazed by weather that would shut down entire states 🇳🇴🇩🇪❄️

They also have quirks:
- saying "ope!" constantly
- measuring distance in hours, not miles
- considering 30 miles "close by"
- and eating lutefisk and lefse at holiday gatherings (Scandinavian traditions) 🍴💀

The Cities (Such As They Are):

Fargo:
- largest city (~125,000 people)
- sits on the Minnesota border
- college town (NDSU — Bison football is huge)
- the "big city" by North Dakota standards
- made famous by the Coen Brothers movie
- and people who say "you betcha" unironically 🏈🎬

Bismarck:
- state capital
- government hub
- quiet, small (70,000 people)
- sits on the Missouri River
- and often forgotten despite being the capital 🏛️

Grand Forks:
- college town (UND — Fighting Hawks)
- sits on the Red River
- flooded catastrophically in 1997
- rebuilt stronger
- and home to the Air Force base ✈️🏒

Minot:
- "Magic City"
- Air Force base town
- western North Dakota hub
- brutal winters even by ND standards
- and people who embrace the cold 🌬️❄️

The Prairie Pothole Region

North Dakota sits in the Prairie Pothole Region — thousands of small wetlands and lakes created by glaciers.

This means:
- waterfowl breeding grounds (ducks everywhere)
- hunting culture is huge
- scattered blue ponds across the landscape
- and some of the best bird watching in the country 🦆🌾

North Dakota Has Weird Stats:

- Lowest unemployment rate in the U.S. (often)
- Highest percentage of residents born in-state (people don't leave)
- One of the safest states (low crime)
- Extremely low population density (space for days)
- and somehow one of the happiest states despite the cold 📊😭❄️

Theodore Roosevelt Loved It

Theodore Roosevelt spent time ranching in the North Dakota Badlands in the 1880s and called it:

"The romance of my life."

He credited North Dakota with shaping him into the man who became President — which says a lot about the character-building power of brutal winters and endless prairie. 🦬🏞️

North Dakota Is:
- endless prairies and dramatic Badlands
- winter temperatures that feel illegal
- agricultural powerhouse
- oil boom country
- tiny towns and massive skies
- home to people who survive -40°F like it's routine
- underestimated and overlooked
- and quietly one of the most resilient, hardworking, and beautiful places in America that nobody thinks about until they actually visit 🌾❄️🛢️

And somehow... all of it works. 💙🌾

I have had a week to process and unpack eXp World Holdings, Inc. acquiring NextHome and what that means for us as Broker/Owners, agents, and most importantly, our clients.
The real estate industry is constantly evolving, and our leadership at NextHome is positioning us to continue growing and adapting through the changes happening in our industry while continuing to support agents and consumers at a high level.

What does this mean?
1. There are now two models under eXp World Holdings, Inc. We are not becoming eXp. eXp will remain a cloud-based brokerage and NextHome will continue operating as its own franchise under eXp World Holdings, Inc. Our leadership team stays in place and will continue growing the NextHome brand and supporting franchise owners across the country. We will continue to be independently owned and operated as NextHome Fredricksen Real Estate, just as we have for the past 10 years since joining NextHome. Our branding stays, our signs stay, and yes....our mascot Luke stays.
2. Our culture remains the same. We will continue to be a voice for the consumer, stay active in the community, and provide the same trusted service and relationships our clients have come to know and love.
3. For our clients, nothing changes. Same personalized service, local knowledge, transparency, and commitment you have always known us for. Our leadership, branding, culture, and values all remain the same.
4. What this partnership does bring is increased stability in this crazy ever-changing industry, resources, innovation, and long-term support. eXp's global reach, financial strength, and technology will create additional opportunities and tools that will continue to benefit both agents and consumers moving forward.
5. NextHome Fredricksen Real Estate will continue looking toward the future while staying grounded in the relationships, knowledge, and service our clients and agents value most. If you are looking for a brokerage focused on growth, collaboration, innovation, community, local support and connections, or are curious what NextHome is all about, I'd love to visit with you.

One of the biggest reasons we joined NextHome 10 years ago was because of their "Humans Over Houses" philosophy-putting relationships, people, and community before transactions. That belief has always aligned with how we do business, and it continues to remain at the heart of who we are today.

We're excited for the future and grateful to continue to serve our community under the NextHome name we know and love! 🧡
