Appeals extended!
*****Breaking News*****
Pender County Commissioners voted to let the suspension of the reval stand, pending discussion with state legislators concerning the possibility of a local bill that would allow Pender County to legally suspend the reval and use 2025 values.
The BOC also voted to extend the appeal window to Oct. 1 to allow appeals to be filed until then.
Commissioners heard a detailed presentation by Vincent Valuations, the company responsible for the revaluation. Vincent defended their methodology, and advised property owners to file appeals if they thought the value assigned to the property was in error.
The legality of the April 7 motion passed by the BOC to suspend the revaluation and revert to the 2025 values for this budget cycle was questioned. Representatives from the N.C. Department of Revenue and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners weighed in on the matter.
Consensus was the motion to suspend was illegal, against state statute and should be rescinded. Dr. Jimmy Tate, who made the April 7 motion to suspend the reval, asked to have the NC legislature consider a local bill which would allow Pender County to use the 2025 tax values after a new schedule of values for 2026 had been adopted.
BOC voted to stay with the motion to suspend the reval pending information from Pender County representatives in Raleigh regarding the possibility of a local bill.
Pender County Commissioners have a regular board meeting scheduled for April 20 and are hopeful legislators will have additional information about a possible local bill. A local bill is a bill passed by both houses of the NC legislature that applies only to a particular county or group of counties.
The Monday night special meeting lasted more than two hours with no comments from the public. Several times Chairman Randy Burton called down individuals who were shouting comments or questions.
