Every night, I get to walk down to the beach in our community and watch the sky put on a show.

Some evenings I take it in from the sand. Some nights from our pontoon boat. And sometimes from my kayak, drifting quietly while the colors shift overhead.

I never know exactly what I'm going to get, and that's part of the joy.

The anticipation of it, the not knowing whether tonight will be soft pinks or deep golds.

It grounds me. It pulls me out of my head and back into the beauty of the world right in front of me.

And here's what I keep coming back to: I get to experience this because we chose, on purpose, to live somewhere that fills us up. After we downsized, the ordinary parts of life got more beautiful, not less.

I recently sat down and wrote out what my dream life looks like.

Not someday, not after retirement, but the life I want to keep building now.

Then I did something a little playful. I used AI to create an image of it, so I could actually see it. And when the picture came together, it stopped me. It captured almost exactly what matters most to me: a loving partnership with my husband, who is my anchor, our adult children and grandchildren close by, time spent near the water and out in nature, and work that means something.

Here's what struck me most. This vision isn't far off from the life I'm already living. After we downsized, I understood something in a deeper way: our futures are not guaranteed, and where you put your time and energy is everything. So I stopped waiting for "later" and started building the life I actually wanted, on purpose.

That's the heart of what I believe. Life is short, and where you live, who you love, and how you spend your days all matter more than we let ourselves admit.

Looking for her spot.

Right there at the edge of the pond and calm, deliberate, completely unbothered by neighbors who had quietly gathered to watch her from a distance.

A large turtle. Looking for a spot to lay her eggs. In my community. Steps from my home.

In the life I almost didn't choose.

I would have missed this completely had I not downsized.

That thought stopped me.

Because this isn't a one-time thing.

Every year they turtles comes back.

Every year the community gets to witness these turtles trying to find that perfect spot.

Every year we hold our breath waiting for the babies to hatch and make their wobbly little way back to the water.

And every year our neighborhood email or community page light up with updates, photos, and people who are genuinely rooting for a group of tiny turtles to make it home.

That's the kind of community I live in now.

And the wildlife doesn't stop there. We have piping plovers fiercely guarding their nests. Bobcats moving silently through the tree line. A bald eagle that shows up like he owns the place, because honestly, he does. Loons, hawks, geese, groundhogs, ducks.

Nature in every direction, every season.

Being connected to the natural world makes me genuinely happy. Not Instagram-happy. Actually happy.

And I didn't know I was missing it until I found it. What I’ve learned is that it is the little things that make life big.

So, I have to ask — what are you missing out on by staying where you are?

People ask me if they should wait for rates to drop before they make a move.

Here's my honest answer: I can't tell you where rates are going.

Nobody can, reliably.

What I can tell you is that here in Rockingham County, inventory is still tight, well-priced homes are selling close to asking, and good homes are not sitting around.

But the bigger truth is this. Waiting for the perfect rate is a lot like waiting for the perfect time in life.

It rarely announces itself, and the waiting has a cost of its own, in years, in stress, in carrying costs, in living in a home that no longer fits.

The right move isn't about timing the market perfectly. It's about whether a change makes sense for your life, your finances, and the chapter you're in.

Sometimes the answer is yes, let's go. Sometimes it's not yet, and that's a real answer too.

Driving over this bridge always makes me think about transitions.

There is something about moving from one side to the other, crossing over the obstacle in between, and trusting that the path will carry you safely across.

I was on my way to see my new granddaughter, and I found myself thinking about home, family, and what it means to choose where we live at different stages of life.

After downsizing, I have learned to see home differently.

Not as a fixed location.
Not as a trap.
Not as something that has to define the rest of my life.

But as one of the most important choices we make about how we want to live right now.

Maybe someday that means living closer to my kids and grandkids.
Maybe it means building an ADU in one of their backyards.
Maybe it means creating a multi-generational home.
Maybe it means moving back to New Jersey for a while to be closer to family.
Maybe it means staying exactly where I am because this season still fits.

That is the point.

Where we live should support the life we are trying to create, not keep us stuck in a version of life that no longer fits.

For many people in Rockingham County, the NH Seacoast, and beyond, the next move is not just about buying or selling a house.

It is about family.
Freedom.
Connection.
Aging well.
Being present for the people we love.

I talked with a woman this week who is downsizing for the second time.

Her first move suited her beautifully for ten years.

Now she's ready for the next one.

She's looking for a place near her daughter and grandchildren, close enough to be part of their everyday lives, with enough room to keep being fully herself.

She's still working. She's in no rush to retire.

And here's what struck me most: there was no fear in any of it.

She wasn't counting every penny or bracing for something to go wrong. She was simply designing her life as it unfolds, choosing the next chapter on purpose rather than waiting for the "right time" to arrive on its own.

I think about how many people stay somewhere a few years too long, not because the home still fits, but because change feels like a big, scary thing. And it doesn't have to be.

A move can be one of the most intentional, hopeful decisions you make.
