This is a win for Colorado residents. š
HB 1119, āAuthority for Different Mill Levy Rates,ā has been defeated in committee.
This proposal would have fundamentally restructured Coloradoās property tax system by allowing land to be taxed at a higher rate than the structures built on it.
Its defeat stops a policy that would have:
⢠Disproportionately impacted retirees, those on fixed incomes, and low- to moderate-income homeowners
⢠Increased the risk of displacement as rising land values drove higher property taxes
⢠Created new barriers for first-time buyers and those in affordable housing programs
⢠Distorted the housing market by favoring higher-density rental properties over homeownership
⢠Exacerbated Coloradoās housing shortage by pushing homeowners out of their communities
