The Ordinary Tuesday

We spend a lot of time looking forward to the big things—vacations, holidays, celebrations, that weekend we've been planning.

But most of a life isn't made up of big days.

It's Tuesday morning coffee.
Driving home with the windows down.
Talking to your daughter while you're making dinner.
The dog asleep at your feet.
Finding something you thought you'd lost.
Laughing so hard at something completely ridiculous that you can't explain why it was funny later.

Those aren't the days between the important days.

Those are the important days.

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

FUN FRIDAY QUESTION: When was the last time you played tourist in Winston-Salem?

We live here, which means it's surprisingly easy to drive past interesting places for years and think, “I really should go there sometime.”

So here's my challenge for the weekend: pick one place around Winston-Salem you haven't been—or haven't visited in ages—and go.

Wander through Old Salem. Find a trail you've never walked. Try a restaurant you've been meaning to visit. Browse a little shop. Find some live music. Order dessert somewhere just because you can.

No errands allowed. This one is purely for fun. 😊

And come back here afterward and tell us what you discovered. We may all end up with ideas for next weekend.

**LOVE LOCAL ❤️ | Cobblestone Farmers Market

There’s something about a Saturday morning at Cobblestone Farmers Market that just feels like Winston-Salem.

Fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, local makers, friendly faces—and that easy feeling of wandering, talking, and discovering something you didn’t know you needed until you saw it.

I love places like this because they remind us that a community is built in small ways: knowing where our food comes from, supporting people who create and grow things locally, and simply taking time to enjoy where we live.

If you haven’t been in a while, put Cobblestone on your Saturday list.

There Is Still Time: I think we sometimes quietly decide we've missed our chance.

Too late to learn that. Too late to go there. Too late to make a change. Too late to start over. Too late to become someone who does that.

I'm becoming increasingly suspicious of “too late.”

Maybe you won't do it exactly the way you would have at 25 or 40. That's okay. You're not 25 or 40 anymore—and you know some things now that you didn't know then.

If there's something you've been thinking about doing, perhaps the better question isn't “Why didn't I do this sooner?”

It's “Why not now?”

Did you know we have some pretty wonderful places to get out on the water without going very far from Winston-Salem? There's Salem Lake right here in town,
Mallard Lake at Tanglewood,
Quarry Lake at Grant Park,
and the beautiful little lake at Winston Lake Park that you may have been to yet.

Pack a picnic.
Take a walk.
Fish.
Paddle.
Find a shady spot and read a book.
Or maybe, best of all, do absolutely nothing except sit beside the water for a while. Sometimes a Saturday doesn't need much more planning than that.

What's your favorite lake or waterside escape around here? I'm always looking for another one to explore!

Wendy's Easy Apple Crisp

I don't know exactly when it happens, but sometime in September my brain decides it's time for something warm and apple-y coming out of the oven. 🍎

Here's one of those desserts that doesn't need to be fancy.

Easy Apple Crisp

Peel and slice about 6 apples and toss them with a little cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Put them in a buttered baking dish.

Mix ¾ cup flour, ¾ cup old-fashioned oats, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Work in ½ cup softened butter until crumbly, then sprinkle it over the apples.

Bake at 350° for about 40–45 minutes, until it's golden and bubbling.

That's it.

It's especially good warm, and I'm certainly not going to discourage anybody from putting vanilla ice cream on top. 😊

Pick One Thing to Do Before Fall is in Full Swing.

Before we get into true fall weather, take one last slow walk around the outside of your house.

You’re not looking for a huge project. Look for the small things that become bigger things when nobody notices them:
leaves collecting where water needs to drain,
a loose railing,
caulk pulling away around a window,
a gutter that needs attention,
a branch brushing the roof.

Pick one and take care of it.

Home maintenance is a lot less overwhelming when we stop thinking, “I need to work on the house,” and start thinking, “What’s the one thing my house needs from me this week?”
That’s usually enough.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To.

Here's a kind of self-care we don't talk about very often: putting something on the calendar that you're genuinely looking forward to.

Not the dentist. Not an oil change. Not another thing you promised somebody you'd do.

Lunch with a friend. A Saturday drive somewhere pretty. Tickets to something you've wanted to see. An afternoon with absolutely nowhere you have to be.

I think we sometimes wait for the fun parts of life to happen spontaneously. Meanwhile, all the obligations get scheduled first.

So before this week fills up, claim a little piece of the future for yourself.

COFFEE WITH WENDY — For Sellers: Don’t Fix Everything

One of the questions I hear from people thinking about selling is, “What do I need to fix before I put the house on the market?”

And sometimes my answer surprises them: not nearly as much as you think.

Before you start replacing countertops, repainting every room, or finally tackling that project you've been putting off for six years, talk to your Realtor.
Some things are absolutely worth doing. Some won't give you your money back.

And some things a buyer may actually prefer to choose for themselves.

My Coffee with Wendy tip? Don't spend $5,000 solving a problem that might only be worth $500 to a buyer.

Get good eyes on the house first. Then spend your time and money where they'll actually make a difference.

Don’t Wait for the House to Be Perfect

I’ve been in a lot of beautiful homes over the years, and I can tell you something: the ones I remember most aren’t necessarily the ones with the perfect kitchen.

They’re the ones where somebody says, “Come on in.”

So invite the friends over even if there are dishes in the sink. Sit on the porch even though you haven’t gotten around to replacing those cushions. Put flowers on the table and order pizza if you don’t feel like cooking.

A home is supposed to be lived in.

Don’t miss the living because you’re still working on the house. ❤️
