There are few welcomes in life quite like the one you get from a dog. ❤️

You can be gone ten minutes or ten hours, and somehow your return is still the best thing that has happened all day.

Guinness reminds me that maybe we humans could borrow a little of that enthusiasm.

Be glad when someone you love walks through the door. Put down what you're doing. Look up. Smile. Let them know you're happy they're there.

We spend so much time thinking about what makes a beautiful home.

Maybe one of the best things about home is simply being somewhere your arrival matters.

And according to Guinness, mine matters quite a lot. 😊

WHY NOT? Need a few ideas for the weekend of August 29–30? Winston-Salem has plenty going on.

You could catch the last weekend of the Winston-Salem Open,

take the family to the Southbound Model Train Expo at the Fairgrounds,

or end Sunday evening outside with the Community Band Concert at Miller Park.

And if you’d rather keep things simple, Salem Lake is always a pretty good answer when you just need some fresh air and room to wander.

The Winston-Salem Open runs through August 29, the train expo is August 29–30, and the Miller Park concert is scheduled for Sunday evening.

My vote? Pick one thing you wouldn’t ordinarily do. Sometimes the best weekends start with, “Why not?”

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT — Louie and Honey’s
One of my favorite things about Winston-Salem is how many places we have that feel genuinely local—and Louie and Honey's Kitchen in the West End is one of those places.

It’s the kind of bakery where stopping in for coffee can very easily turn into bringing home something from the pastry case too.

Their cinnamon rolls have quite a following, and the whole place has that neighborhood feeling that makes you want to linger for a few minutes instead of rushing on to the next thing.

If you haven’t tried it yet, put it on your Winston-Salem list. And if you have—tell me what you order. I’m always willing to conduct further pastry research. 😊

The Five-Minute Welcome Test

Here’s a quick little home experiment: walk outside, turn around, and pretend you’re seeing your house for the first time. What’s the first thing you notice?

Maybe the porch needs sweeping.

Maybe one pot of flowers would wake everything up.

Maybe the front door could use a wipe-down, the house numbers are hard to see, or the welcome mat has definitely seen better days.

Give yourself five minutes and fix just one thing.

Whether you’re ever planning to sell or happily staying put, curb appeal isn’t really about impressing strangers. It’s about having your own home say, “Welcome back,” when you pull into the driveway.💝

I've been thinking about how we talk about “community” as though it's this big thing we have to go out and find.
But maybe most of the time, we build it in much smaller ways.

It's sitting on the porch with a friend and talking longer than you planned. Inviting someone over instead of saying, “We really need to get together sometime.” Checking on a neighbor. Stopping to talk instead of waving from the car. Making room for one more person at the table.

Those little moments may not seem like much, but put enough of them together and that's exactly what community becomes.

So maybe this week, pick one person you've been meaning to spend some time with—and actually make the date. ❤️

Coffee in hand this morning, and I'm looking around thinking about how sometimes the smallest changes make a house feel completely different.

Nothing expensive. Nothing that requires a contractor. 😊

Add a little color. A pot of flowers, a bright pillow, something you already own moved to a place where you can actually enjoy it.

Bring some of the outdoors in. Cut a few branches or flowers from the yard, add a plant to a room that needs some life, or just open those curtains and let the sunshine in.

Make one spot extra comfortable. The chair where you read. A little corner of the porch. Your favorite place to have that first cup of coffee. Give yourself one spot that makes you happy every time you see it.

I think we spend so much time taking care of our houses that we sometimes forget to simply enjoy them.

So that's my Coffee with Wendy thought for today: What could you do in 20 minutes that would make you smile when you walk back into the room?

Looking for a peaceful spot to stretch your legs and enjoy a lunch outdoors away from the crowds? 🌿🧺

Here are 5 hidden-gem walking and picnic spots around the Winston-Salem area that offer beauty, easy paths, and plenty of breathing room:

🏡 Historic Bethabara Park – Flat wetland boardwalks, historic Moravian buildings, and shaded grassy lawns for a quiet picnic blanket set-up.

🌷 Reynolda Gardens & Estate Grounds – Beyond the main formal gardens lie quiet woodland trails, Lake Katharine wetlands, and shady rolling lawns.

🌊 The Quarry at Grant Park – Paved walking loops with dramatic turquoise water views and a skyline overlook that stays surprisingly low-key.

⛰️ Horizons Park – Rolling countryside, soft-surface trails, and distant mountain views with endless open green space to spread out.

🌉 Muddy Creek Greenway (via Jamison Park) – A smooth, flat paved path along the creek with charming footbridges and quiet park lawns nearby.

🌻 August Home & Garden Tips: Late-Summer Prep

Late August is the bridge into fall—the perfect time to refresh your outdoor spaces for the season ahead! I love getting ready. All the mum colors to choose from!

• Plant Fall Mums Early: Repot nursery mums into larger containers using fresh potting mix. Planting them now lets roots establish, giving you bigger, longer-lasting blooms all autumn.

• Layer Autumn Decor: Start building early curb appeal! Pair potted mums with heirloom pumpkins, lanterns, and a warm-toned leaf wreath for instant seasonal charm.

• Adjust Watering Habits: Mums dry out quickly in late summer heat. Water them deeply at the base—preferably early in the morning—to prevent wilting.

• Prep the Deck: Take advantage of dry August weather to clean, inspect, or seal your wooden deck and outdoor furniture before rainy fall weather arrives.

What do you enjoy most? I'd love to know.
