In 1889, a man named Thomas Woodroffe organized a company around a granite deposit outside Mount Airy, North Carolina, and in doing so created what is now the largest open face granite quarry on Earth. ⛏️

The site had actually been worked in a small way since 1743, by Moravian settlers who recognized good stone when they saw it, but it was the arrival of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad that turned it into a serious industry. Woodroffe needed stone for railway stations along the new line, found it right there in Surry County, and built a company around it instead of just a few buildings.

More than a century later, the North Carolina Granite Corporation is still cutting stone from that same 200 acre pit, and geologists estimate there is enough granite left to keep going at the current rate for another 500 years. Stone from Mount Airy has ended up in structures across the entire country that most people never connect back to this one small Piedmont town. 🪨
