The “Blackbeard’s Trail” Road Trip along the North Carolina Outer Banks and coast takes you to 6 historic places tied to the life, hideouts, shipwrecks, and legends of the feared pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. In Bath, North Carolina, you can explore the state’s oldest town and visit the Bath State Historic Site, where exhibits share the story of the pirate who once made his home near these quiet colonial streets. From there, Ocracoke Island brings you close to the waters where Blackbeard’s final fight took place in November 1718, when Lieutenant Robert Maynard’s forces ended his life and his reign at sea.

At the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, shipwreck history and pirate stories come together along a coastline known for dangerous shoals and lost vessels. In Beaufort, the North Carolina Maritime Museum displays recovered artifacts from Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, which ran aground near Beaufort Inlet in 1718 and was discovered offshore in 1996. Portsmouth Village adds a quieter stop, with sandy paths and weathered buildings from a once-busy port town. The trip ends at Virginia’s First Landing State Park, where old legends claim Blackbeard may have hidden treasure in the shadowy swamp.
