North Carolina’s story did not begin with statehood in 1789. 🌿🪶

For thousands of years, Native peoples lived throughout the region, building communities around its rivers, forests, mountains and coastal lands. Nations and peoples including the Cherokee, Catawba, Lumbee, Tuscarora, Saponi, Meherrin and Waccamaw Sioux have deep historical connections to what is now North Carolina.

The 1700s and 1800s brought enormous upheaval. Colonial expansion, warfare, treaties, disease and government policies displaced Indigenous communities and transformed their traditional homelands. The Cherokee Removal and the Trail of Tears became one of the most painful chapters in the region’s history.

But Native history did not end with displacement.

Today, North Carolina’s Native communities continue to preserve and revitalize their languages, traditions, ceremonies, stories, arts and connections to the land. Tribal nations and communities—including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Lumbee Tribe and Catawba Indian Nation—continue carrying their heritage forward.

Native heritage can still be found throughout North Carolina in place names, archaeological sites, historic communities, cultural traditions and living tribal nations.

Understanding North Carolina means recognizing that Native peoples were here long before the state existed—and their history, culture and legacy remain part of North Carolina today.

North Carolina’s story is much older than statehood. 🏔️🌿🪶
