NASA's Artemis II mission is the first crewed flight of the Artemis program, scheduled to launch today, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 6:24 p.m. EDT. The mission will send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth, marking the first time humans have traveled to the vicinity of the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Mission Overview

Objective: To test the Orion spacecraft's critical life-support systems and verify human deep-space capabilities before a planned lunar landing in later missions.

Launch Vehicle: The mission utilizes the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, launching from Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39B.

Trajectory: The crew will follow a "free-return trajectory," looping around the far side of the Moon—reaching a distance of roughly 252,000 miles from Earth—before gravity pulls them back for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
