🏔️ WINTER PARK UPDATE: The Gondola Portal Just Got a Plot Twist

If you've been following the URA and ATS ("the gondola") story with me, here's the latest.

Back in May, the Town showed two design concepts for the downtown gondola portal near Town Hall — one that would close Vasquez Road for a pedestrian plaza, one that would keep it open. This summer's community survey (246 responses) showed strong support for the vibe everyone wants — food, fire pits, year-round activation — but real concern about traffic if Vasquez closes.

So now there's a THIRD option on the table: routing the gondola over Vasquez Road entirely, landing passengers on the Town Hall side instead of closing the street. The Town has engineers studying whether that's even feasible.

The big date: September 22, 2026 — that's when Town Council decides which way this goes, ahead of a U.S. Forest Service permit application due in early October.

Winter Park just showed the world what the gondola landing could actually look like — and one of the two designs would close Vasquez Road in front of Town Hall and turn the whole area into a year-round pedestrian plaza. 🚡🏔️

This week the Town Council reviewed the first real design concepts for the downtown gondola portal. 📐

🚡 The "most transformative" option creates a full pedestrian corridor from Cooper Creek Square to the resort base — food, retail, skier services, and a gondola terminal where a parking lot used to be.

🛣️ The second design keeps the road open with a more modest plaza and raised pedestrian crossings.

📅 A final plan is expected by mid-summer. Public outreach — including a block party — is set for July. And construction on the first resort-side development (up to 400 units and 35,000 sq ft of commercial space) is targeted to begin as early as this summer.

The URA, TIF financing, Alterra's capital, and the Town's seven-year buildout plan are all pointed in the same direction. This is no longer a vision — it's a design with two options and a deadline. 🏗️

🏔️ Big things are happening at Winter Park Resort. The $2 billion "Winter Park Unlocked" master plan is gaining serious momentum — Town Council has already approved the first development plan for the resort base, construction could start this summer, and the gondola connecting the resort to downtown is in active planning.
This is the kind of transformation that happens once in a generation. If you live here, own property here, or are thinking about it — this is worth paying attention to.
