DOLLY CAME TO LETCHER COUNTY — AND LEFT A SONG BEHIND

Long before Dolly Parton became one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world, she walked onto a makeshift stage in the old Whitesburg High School gymnasium and performed before a crowd “packed to the rafters.”

That was in 1968.

Twelve years later, Dolly unexpectedly returned to Letcher County — this time aboard a tour bus with Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda. The two stopped in Fleming-Neon and then at Whitesburg’s Burger Queen, where Fonda ordered a double cheeseburger and coffee while hardly anyone in town realized who was there.

And in between those visits, Dolly recorded a song whose title has a remarkable Letcher County connection.

This week, The Mountain Eagle looks back at Dolly Parton’s surprising ties to Letcher County — including the night she stole the show in Whitesburg, the strange day she and Jane Fonda arrived in town, and the race to get their photographs into the newspaper by press deadline.
