Some of the best lessons Iâve learned in banking and real estate didnât come from a textbookâthey came from listening.
One thing Iâve carried with me from banking into real estate is the importance of asking the right questions.
In banking, we conducted customer assessments and discovery conversations. We werenât just there to answer questions or complete a transactionâwe were there to understand the person sitting across from us. After every conversation, we were expected to remember something meaningful because those details helped us serve people better.
Tonight, I found myself doing the same thing with a real estate client.
For about 12 minutes, we talked about bedrooms, budgets, accessibility, move-in dates, and everything youâd expect in a home search. But the one thing I wrote down wasnât on the checklist.
Then he said something that stopped me for a second.
âIt doesnât matter where you live. It matters how you live.â
That sentence reminded me that real estate is never just about square footage, the number of bedrooms, or finding the perfect neighborhood.
Itâs about understanding someoneâs lifestyle, their priorities, and what âhomeâ truly means to them.
It also reminded me that changing industries doesnât mean leaving your skills behind. The ability to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and genuinely understand people is just as valuable in real estate as it is in banking.
I may have helped someone move one step closer to finding a home, but I left the conversation a little richer in wisdom.
Because sometimes, the most valuable thing you take away from a client conversation isnât written on the paperwork.
đŹ Whatâs one piece of advice or wisdom someone shared with you that has stayed with you?
