CSS Profile

接著,可以用 FAFSA 官網的「Who’s My FAFSA Parent?」

When Family Changes Affect Financial Aid

Your child lives with you, so you assume you’re the parent who should complete the financial aid forms. It sounds reasonable. But if you’re divorced or separated, that may not be the right answer.

For the FAFSA, start by asking: Which parent provided more of the student’s financial support during the past 12 months? The answer may be different from where the student lives. If that parent has remarried, their spouse’s information may also be needed.

The CSS Profile may ask for information about stepparents, and some schools require a separate form from the other parent.

My tip: Before inviting anyone to fill out a form, write down who supported the student during the past year and whether either parent has remarried. Then use the FAFSA’s “Who’s My FAFSA Parent?” tool to check your answer.

No parent wants a form mistake to add stress while their child is planning for college. If the family questions give you pause, slow down and check, or reach out to me. You don’t have to figure it out by guessing.

When the Paycheck Stops, Can We Feel Comfortable Using Our Retirement Savings?

We spend decades working and saving. Then retirement arrives, the regular paycheck stops, and taking money out feels very different from putting money in.

It is not that we do not want to enjoy retirement. We simply wonder:

Will our money last?
What if we live longer than expected?
What if the market falls or we need long-term care?

Many of us may have retirement savings but still not know how much we can safely spend each month.

A retirement income plan helps us understand which income will continue and how our monthly expenses will be covered. Social Security and pensions may provide a foundation. Investments and cash reserves can offer growth and flexibility. In the right situation, an annuity can turn part of our savings into more predictable income.

Our savings should do more than pay bills. They should also help us travel, enjoy our interests, create memories with family, and live the retirement we worked so hard to build.

If your paychecks stopped tomorrow, would you feel comfortable covering your monthly expenses?

Life Insurance or an Annuity: Why Would We Need One?

A friend recently asked me, “Insurance companies charge premiums and lots of fees. Why should we buy these products and help them make money?”

That is a fair question. None of us enjoys paying for something unless we understand why we need it.

If a parent or spouse passes away unexpectedly, the grief is already overwhelming. But the bills do not stop. The mortgage, groceries, utilities, and children’s expenses still need to be paid, even when a paycheck suddenly disappears.

We sometimes see grieving families turn to GoFundMe. The kindness of others may help, but donations are uncertain and may not be enough.

Life insurance cannot replace the person we love. It can, however, give the family time and financial support to move forward without immediately worrying about paying the next bill.

An annuity addresses the opposite concern: What if we live a long life and our savings do not last as long as we do?

Not everyone needs life insurance or an annuity, and not every product is suitable. It comes down to one honest question:

“If the unexpected happens, can my family and I afford to carry the long-term financial loss ourselves?”

Recently, someone contacted me.

Her husband was critically ill and unconscious. While trying to cope with everything happening to her family, she suddenly faced another problem: their finances.

They had a living trust, but she couldn't remember exactly what was in it or who had financial power of attorney. They had also recently purchased an annuity, but she wasn't sure what kind it was. Her husband could no longer answer questions or sign anything.

What would we do if we were in her shoes?

We are already worried, exhausted, frustrated, and heartbroken. Yet we may also have to search through paperwork and emails, trying to figure out what we own, what was signed, who has authority to act, and whom we should call.

Many of us have a trust, insurance, retirement accounts, investments, or annuities. But these documents are usually created at different times over many years. Before we know it, they may be scattered among different drawers, folders, or emails, and even we may not remember where everything is.

Keeping important documents and information organized in a place that our family and we know about and can easily find when needed is an important part of planning too.

**Sometimes the best thing we can do for the people we love isn't just leaving them assets. It's leaving them less confusion and stress when they need us most.**

If this story makes you think about your own situation, and you're not sure where to begin, I'm here to help.

Our Child Has 15 Colleges on the List. But Why Is Each One There?

By senior year, the college list can get longer and longer.

“My friend is applying there.”
“It’s highly ranked.”
“Everyone says it’s a good school.”

Before we know it, there are 15 or even 20 schools on the list.

But every school we add can mean more essays, more deadlines, and more pressure.

Maybe the better question is:

“If you get accepted, would you really want to go?”

There’s nothing wrong with applying to more schools. But our kids only have so much time and energy. I’d rather see them put their best effort into schools they would truly consider.

When I help families with FAFSA and CSS Profile planning and filing, I also review the college list so we don’t miss each school’s financial aid requirements and deadlines.

It’s not about having a long or short list. It’s about having the right list.

DO WE MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY TO QUALIFY FOR FINANCIAL AID?

Many parents ask me:

“Our income is too high. We probably won’t qualify for financial aid, so why bother applying?”

But it’s not always that simple.

There is no single income cutoff for financial aid. Eligibility can depend on family finances, household circumstances, the cost of the college, and the school’s own financial aid policies.

And need-based aid isn’t the only opportunity.

Some students may qualify for merit scholarships based on academics, talent, leadership, or other achievements. Some colleges and scholarship programs may also require the FAFSA for certain types of aid.

So before assuming your family makes too much, check the financial aid requirements for each college on your child’s list. You may have more options than you think.

Is the Most Expensive College Really the Best Choice?

For many parents, seeing their child accepted by a prestigious university is a dream come true.

And for good reason.

Prestigious colleges can offer outstanding education, influential alumni networks, and opportunities that may shape a student's future.

But as college costs continue to rise, it's worth asking another question.

Is paying more always worth it?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes another college may offer an excellent education and great opportunities with a much lower financial burden.

Maybe the goal isn't simply to pursue the most prestigious college.

Perhaps it's to support your child in finding the college that's the right fit academically, personally, and financially.

As your family navigates this decision together, what matters most for your child's future?
