No visit to Maine is complete with stopping by the Goldenrod Candy Shop & Restaurant in the coastal town of York, where generations of beachgoers have grabbed a meal and treated themselves to something sweet. Just steps from Short Sands Beach, this York Beach landmark has been serving visitors since 1896, when Edward and Mattie Talpey opened the business on the same site it occupies today. Inside, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner before heading to the candy counter or antique marble soda fountain. The Goldenrod makes its own ice cream onsite and rotates through more than 135 flavors, along with sundaes, floats, frappes, and banana splits. Candy is just as big a draw, with fudge, brittle, caramel corn, chocolate bark, and the famous Goldenrod Kisses. Those saltwater taffy pieces are still made fresh daily, and visitors can watch the candy makers working through the front windows. Around eight million pieces are produced each year. Since The Goldenrod is a seasonal York Beach tradition, stopping in during summer feels like part restaurant, part candy shop, and part trip back in time.

When the summer crowds head home and the air turns crisp, York settles into a slower rhythm that's hard not to love.

The beaches become peaceful. The trails grow quieter. Historic streets seem even more inviting beneath canopies of colorful leaves. It's the kind of place where you can spend the morning exploring, the afternoon hiking, and the evening gathered around one of Maine's most memorable fall traditions.

Every year, Long Sands Beach becomes the setting for the Beach Bonfire Benefit, a community event that's been warming hearts since 2001. What began as a fundraiser following the events of September 11 has grown into a beloved annual tradition supporting local charities, raising more than $100,000 over the years. A towering bonfire lights up the shoreline while families enjoy live entertainment, food, raffles, and the unmistakable feeling of a community coming together for a good cause.

Before the fire is lit, spend the day discovering everything else York has to offer.

Step back in time at Old York Village, where beautifully preserved colonial buildings tell the story of one of Maine's earliest settlements. Wander through museums, historic homes, and quiet village streets that have welcomed visitors for centuries.

Looking for a little adventure? Head up Mount Agamenticus, where miles of hiking trails wind through forests that burst into shades of red, orange, and gold each fall. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views that stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the White Mountains on a clear day.

And of course, no visit to York feels complete without a stroll along the coast. Walk the wide sands of Long Sands Beach, explore the rocky shoreline, or make your way to Cape Neddick "Nubble" Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England. Without the bustle of peak summer, you'll have more space to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and enjoy the scenery.

Fall has a way of making York feel even more authentic.

The history stands out a little more.

The coastline feels a little quieter.

And gathering around a bonfire with the sound of the Atlantic in the background? That's a Maine memory you'll be talking about long after the leaves have fallen.
