National Scavenger Hunt Day!!

Individuals or teams can take part in scavenger hunts, where items are found or a list of tasks are completed. Clues on how to find items are often given and certain locations may need to be reached. There may be a set time that a scavenger hunt needs to be finished during, making it crucial that participants work quickly. There usually is a prize for the first person or team who finds the item or finishes the tasks. On Scavenger Hunt Day, family and friends gather together to compete in these types of hunts, especially in ones that take place during parties.

There are a number of variations on the good-old-fashioned scavenger hunt. Technology allows people from all around the world to participate in scavenger hunts through the internet and apps. Geocaching uses a global positioning system (GPS) to find caches of items, usually located in waterproof containers with trinkets and a logbook. A type of outdoor hunt that doesn't use GPS is letterboxing.

Scavenger hunts are derived from ancient folk games and gained popularity in the United States on account of Elsa Maxwell, who began hosting parties for the social elite of New York City in the 1930s, where she implemented scavenger hunts as party games. She was born on May 24, 1883, which clues us in to why Scavenger Hunt Day takes place today. In more modern times, scavenger hunts have become popular at American universities. One well-known university hunt is the University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt.

A hanging planter doesn’t necessarily have to hold succulents or other house plants. You can create a lovely hanging water garden that gives you the greenery that you want and adds a really unique look to a room. An upcycled fish bowl is perfect for this and you can add any water plant that you want. Rocks and other embellishments give it a really pretty look and this one can be put together in about five minutes.

What you need:
Small Jars with Lip
Leather Lace
String
Scissors
Small Aquatic Plants
Rocks
Water
Wooden Skewer

Put it together:
-Cut a length of string or leather over double of the length that you want it to hang.
-Tie a loop in each end and trim the short ends.
-Cut a piece of string or leather long enough to wrap around the neck of the jar a few times.
-Put the neck piece through the loops you created on the piece that the jar will hang from.
-Wrap the neck piece around a few times and tie securely in place. Trim ends.
-Rinse off plant and rocks in room temperature water.
-Place rocks in the bottom of the jar.
-Place plant in the jar and use the wooden skewer to hide the roots if necessary. One of the plants that I bought is just a floating plant so the roots don’t have to be covered. (Looove this kind!)
-Carefully add room temperature water to cover the plants. Use the side of the jar or your finger to prevent the water from pouring directly on the plant or disturbing the rocks.

International Pay it Forward Day

The concept of "pay it forward" is nothing new. The phrase may first have appeared in print in 1916, in the book In the Garden of Delight, although the concept goes back much further. Since 2007, there has been a yearly event devoted to it. International Pay it Forward Day is a "global initiative that exists to make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness felt across the world." Each year, people in over 80 countries participate by performing over 10 million acts of kindness. When small acts of kindness and giving are performed by millions of people, there is a potential for the world to be changed for the better, which is the ultimate goal of Pay it Forward Day.

Australia's Blake Beattie created the day, being inspired by Catherine Ryan Hyde's book Pay It Forward, which was published in 1999 and adapted into a feature film the following year. Pay it Forward Day was first held in 2007, and by its second year was being marked by people in five countries. By the fifth year, people in 35 countries were celebrating and there had been seven state proclamations and fifteen city proclamations. By 2017, people in over 80 countries were celebrating each year, and over 100 city and state proclamations had been made in honor of the day.

Participants are asked to do between one and three good deeds on the day without asking for anything in return—the recipient is told to "pay it forward" instead. People participate by paying for someone else's coffee, meal, groceries, or gas; helping out someone in need; or making donations. "Pay it forward" activities are organized at schools, offices, churches, and other locations.

DECOUPAGED TERRA COTTA POTS

Materials needed for the project:

– lovely decorative napkins ( possibly with patterns or shapes that you can cut out )

– mod podge

– paint brush

– paint ( acrylic paint would totally work)

-scissors
It was so super easy to do, and I love my “new” pots.

STEPS:

1. First I painted my pots. I used Martha Stewart chalk paint for the yellow and regular acrylic paint for the white paint.

2. I let the paint completely dry.

3.While the paint was drying, I cut out my flowers shape from the napkin.

4. I mod podge the napkin and slowly smoothed it on the pot.

5. I then sealed the whole pot with a coat of mod podge.

TADA!

Yep. Simple is that my friends!

National Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day

Today we celebrate and eat pigs in a blanket. "Pigs in a blanket" can be the singular or plural name for the food, a "pig in a blanket" can be the singular name, or "pigs in blankets" can be the plural name. There are many different variations and names for the food in different parts of the world.

In the United States, pigs in a blanket consist of hot dogs or Vienna sausages that have been wrapped in biscuit dough or croissant dough and then baked. Sometimes breakfast sausages wrapped in pancakes are also called pigs in a blanket. Other names for the food are franks in a blanket, franks in blanks, and wiener winks. Although, wiener winks tend to use bread and cheese in their recipe instead of biscuit dough or croissant dough.

In the United Kingdom, pigs in a blanket most commonly refer to small sausages—often chipolata—wrapped in bacon. They are sometimes called kilted sausages and are regularly eaten as appetizers accompanying Christmas dinner. There are many other types throughout the world. In Israel, Moshe Ba'Teiva, meaning "Moses in the Ark" or "Moses in the Basket," are small hot dogs that have been rolled in a ketchup-covered puff pastry or phyllo dough and baked in an oven. In Mexico, salchitacos are sausages wrapped in tortillas and fried in vegetable oil.

Pigs in a blanket are a popular food with children. In fact, the first printed reference to them may have appeared in Betty Crocker's Cook Book for Boys and Girls, printed in 1957. They may be large or small. Those that are eaten in only a bite or two are especially popular as hors d'oeuvres at cocktail parties or as appetizers before the main course. Pigs in a blanket are commonly dipped in ketchup, mustard, or aioli.
