Fun Fact Saturday Morning.

90% of the time you see me post about flying LiDAR. This is what I am doing…….collecting millions upon millions of data carrying points…..If you’re feeing a tad bit nerdy……read on. I’ve also attached a small clip of a project we did one of our local clients in the Village of Clarksburg.

What is LiDAR?
LiDAR stands for *Light Detection And Ranging*. It is a remote sensing technology that uses rapid
pulses of laser light to measure distances with extremely high accuracy. By calculating how long each
pulse takes to return to the sensor, LiDAR creates precise 3D models of terrain, structures, and objects.

How LiDAR Works
A LiDAR unit emits laser pulses → the pulses reflect off surfaces → the sensor records the return time.
Millions of these measurements combine to form a point cloud, a dense 3D map of the environment.

What LiDAR Produces
LiDAR systems generate:
• Point clouds
• Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)
• Bare earth models
• Canopy/vegetation models
• Building and infrastructure models

Common Uses
LiDAR is widely used in:
• Surveying & mapping
• Civil engineering & construction
• Forestry and agriculture
• Autonomous vehicles
• Archaeology
• Drone-based topographic scanning
