Urgent: Ongoing Homestead Exemption Issue and Request for Resolution
Good afternoon,
I am writing because I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with the continued handling of my Homestead Exemption.
I have left several messages for Ms. George at 340-774-2991, extension 4323, and I have yet to receive a return call.
For approximately two years, I have been working with Ms. Wallace/Willis regarding this issue. I previously had my Homestead Exemption for three years, and then it was removed. I have been trying ever since to get this corrected.
I was also specifically advised not to pay the disputed $400 for 2025. I explained that I had a check ready for the taxes owed, minus the $400, because I had been instructed not to pay that amount. When I recently reminded the office of those instructions, instead of addressing what I had previously been told, I was referred to Ms. George.
Now I cannot even get Ms. George to return my calls.
One of the issues apparently concerns the trust I established. This trust is not a business. This should be something that can be verified through DLCA or, if necessary, directly with my attorney. I simply need someone to communicate with me and tell me exactly what documentation is required to resolve this once and for all.
To make matters worse, the tax forms I submitted for 2024 have apparently been lost by the office. Those documents contained my personal information, and I find it extremely concerning that no one can account for where they are. I had to complete and submit the paperwork again for 2025.
I stood in line on an extremely hot day two years ago, along with many other property owners, to address these Homestead Exemption issues. Others have received their exemptions, while I am still trying to correct mine two years later.
This situation has gone on far too long. I am asking for someone with the authority to review my entire file, contact me directly, and provide a clear explanation of:
1. Why my Homestead Exemption was removed after I had received it for three years;
2. What is still required to reinstate it;
3. How the trust is affecting my exemption and what verification you require;
4. What happened to my 2024 documents containing my personal information; and
5. How the $400 for 2025 will be handled, since I was specifically instructed not to pay it.
I have made every effort to comply with the requirements and resolve this through the proper channels. The lack of communication, lost paperwork, conflicting information, and inability to receive a return phone call are unacceptable.
Please have Ms. George, or a supervisor who has the authority to resolve this matter, contact me as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Denise Fraguela
