Drydocks World has been awarded the contract for the refurbishment and life extension of the FPSO BAOBAB IVOIRIEN, by Pte Ltd.

Once refurbished, the vessel will operate for 15 more years, continuing to support energy production in West Africa.

Set to commence in May 2025, the eight-month expedited project on the Floating Production Storage and Offloading ( ) vessel will involve extensive structural enhancements, including 1,000 tonnes of steel renewal, 250,000 square meters of tank coating, and 11,500 meters of new piping.

The plays a crucial role in ’s offshore production, with a processing capacity of 70,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and 75 million cubic feet of natural gas. It can also inject 100,000 bpd of water and store up to two million barrels of crude oil. The vessel, currently operating at the , 25 km off the coast of Côte d'Ivoire, will relocate to Drydocks World’s Dubai facility for its eight-month refurbishment.

Originally converted in 2003 from an Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC), FPSO BAOBAB IVOIRIEN was designed with expandable topsides to maximize offshore production capacity. FPSOs like this are essential in deepwater operations, enabling and processing at sea before transferring resources to tankers or pipelines.

The collaboration will leverage Norway’s renewable energy resources to produce green ammonia, a key carrier for efficiently transporting hydrogen over long distances.

By combining ’s production capabilities with 𝐇ö𝐞𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐯𝐢’s expertise in marine infrastructure, the partnership seeks to establish scalable infrastructure to support the growing market for clean hydrogen. 𝐇ö𝐞𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐯𝐢 is also advancing floating import terminals for hydrogen, including a collaboration with the French port of Port-La Nouvelle, while North Ammonia is developing production facility at Fjord Base, strengthening its role as maritime hub and contributing to local job creation.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 has reported a 52% surge in demand for 𝐥𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐚𝐬 (𝐋𝐍𝐆) as bunker fuel in 2024, reaching 0.94 million cubic meters compared to 0.62 million cbm in 2023. This increase marks a recovery from the previous decline due to inflated gas prices. Meanwhile, total maritime fuel bunkering in the port saw a slight drop to 9.8 million tonnes from 9.9 million tonnes in 2023.Notably, bio-methanol demand skyrocketed to nearly 4,000 tonnes from just 750 tonnes the previous year. However, demand showed mixed trends, with an initial rise in early 2024 followed by a sharp decline, attributed to increased Asian supply after the EU imposed anti-dumping duties on 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐬. Despite market shifts, bio-blended fuel consumption remained steady at 750,000 tonnes, reflecting the evolving landscape of sustainable alternatives.

Designed by Finland-based ,the additions will enhance the terminal’s capacity to service two vessels simultaneously once fully commissioned and berth renovations are complete. The upgrade, set for completion in 2028, will allow to accommodate the largest vessels on the U.S. East Coast, according to 𝐄𝐝 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 .
