In Texas, an innovative housing initiative is offering older women an affordable way to live independently while remaining part of a close-knit, supportive community.
At 70 years old, Robyn Yerian invested approximately $150,000 of her retirement savings to build a charming tiny-home village called “The Bird’s Nest” in Cumby, Texas. The community is thoughtfully designed for women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who desire both personal independence and the comfort of nearby friendship and mutual support.
Residents live in compact homes situated close together, fostering a strong sense of neighborly care. They regularly help one another with daily tasks such as providing rides, running errands, and sharing meals.
With monthly rent set at around $450, the village makes comfortable living far more attainable for women on fixed retirement incomes. The concept has generated significant interest, drawing numerous applications from women eager to join.
This project reflects a growing movement to develop creative, supportive, and truly affordable housing solutions for older adults.
