Here’s a Black History Month fact to celebrate:

Dr. Patricia Bath (1942–2019) was the first African American woman to receive a medical patent. She invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that revolutionized cataract surgery by using a laser to remove cataracts with greater precision. Her invention restored sight to countless patients and changed the field of ophthalmology forever.

Dr. Bath was also the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent and the first Black woman to complete an ophthalmology residency. Her contributions to eye care continue to impact millions worldwide!

The Tulsa Real Estate Exchange was a key part of Black Wall Street’s success, allowing Black entrepreneurs to buy, sell, and develop land independently of white-owned banks. Along with the Negro Business League, it helped Black Tulsa residents build wealth and sustain a thriving economy. Even after the 1921 massacre, many survivors rebuilt their businesses through community fundraising and private investment, showcasing the resilience, financial intelligence, and unity of early 20th-century Black entrepreneurs.
