Everyone,
Many of you are not aware of what is going on in my personal life but I wanted to let all of you know that I have had some crazy, crazy stuff going on in the past 4-5 years with my family. We are all good and happy but between 5 or 6 of us, we have battled cancers, heart attacks, strokes and my baby girl (21 years old, but still my baby girl) had a tumor that rendered her paralyzed from T-4 down. My wife and I have been back and forth from Tampa to Fort Myers since last January and working hard to get her back on her feet again. She is as strong and faithful as all of us put together and hopes to walk at her graduation this May from college.

Things are not as bad as some of you and I am not telling all of you this to feel sorry for us. We are making it through all of this and our faith in God and family has not wavered. I only tell this publicly because I cannot focus on the business life when my family needs this much attention.
I had informed my crews last year that I did not know the future of KBI and I would be supportive if they found work elsewhere. Reluctantly, they all found different work places but I think they are all happy in what they are doing still. If you know me at all, you know that I love my crews like family. It was heart breaking to tell them that I would be gone for a while. I still have a crew but we are made up of the guys that have actually retired from other professions. We are in the process of covering any warranty issues and contracts that were approved prior to the decision not to take on any more work. But will be shutting down permanently in the near future.

Although, I need to be with my family, I do miss meeting people and old friends that we have done business with for the past 2 decades. I have already retired from the fire department after 32 years and most of you know that I have always had KBI on my days off from the fire station. I never really needed the money but I had a really good time with this. Out of thousands of customers, there have only been a handful of people that I did not enjoy :) .

It has been an absolute pleasure to be in service of everyone that we met. I have loved this venture from the moment we started. This town and people have been very good to me. I hope that I have reciprocated.

I wish all of you, Peace and Good Fortune! Thank you for being a part of our lives

I feel the need to share this only because we all tell the same stories regarding contractors that have no attachment to this area or it's clients. Not that they are all bad, but many are. They are here to make money which is definitely a good thing but there are always those guys that come with a "get rich quick" attitude that inevitably leave or friends and neighbors with unresolved problems.

I recently visited a client's house to discuss gutter and drainage questions. I have had correspondence with this couple a few times for different contracts for probably the last 14 years or so. They are a professional couple, very nice and always wanting as much information as they can take before they make any decisions on what they should do for the sake of good investing. I agree with that philosophy and we had a pretty good discussion on what we should do moving forward.
While I was walking around the house, which had been damaged from Ian, I took note of a new electrical service and meter that was oddly placed. I can tell that it was recently completed because Tracie and I have been through this a few times with properties in the past.
I didn't want to be rude, and I hope I didn't come off like a judgmental jerk, but I had asked them who it was that did this job. They said it was a company that was available at the time. I started talking about my electrician and how much I love he and his company. If anyone knows Jody, they know what I'm talking about. He has the codes to enter my house if he has to come when we aren't there. My dogs know him and are happy to see him and the crew. We caught his guys taking my dog out for a walk one day when they didn't know that we were going to be home soon. They are like family. I felt bad that this electrical job looked as bad as it did. But they said that they couldn't wait for their electrician. He was backed up for months and didn't know when he could be there. So, they went with this other company. They felt in their hearts that the work was "hurried" and they paid too much.
When I started telling them that I have been waiting for my electrician since November 2023, and I was in the same boat, we realized that we had Jody in common. He was their electrician for years. He was just not available.
I'm not sure what the moral of this story is but, I have many things that have to wait until Jody comes by to fix my electrical issues. I can honestly tell you that I really don't know if he is more expensive or less than anyone else. But I will wait if I can.
After a weather event like Irma or Ian, all of us become inundated with calls. We had way too many requests that we knew we couldn't get to many of our clients. I personally do not mind when contractors flock to this area to scoop up as much hurricane work as they can. I know that all of us cannot handle the amount of work that is laid out before us without help from the outside. I just always caution people to make sure you do your due diligence.
This electrical panel had to be done without a doubt but the way it is now is what my clients will see for the rest of the time that they own this house. It will not be fiscally sound to redo that part of the house remodel.
Jody has not responded to all of my texts and calls but I know he isn't sitting in a room full of money twisting his mustache and laughing at the people that desperately need his help.
We had so many calls within the first three weeks that we were booked out for nearly 27 months if all of the jobs were approved. We are still working on that list but many have hired another contractor because they can't wait. I have no hard feelings about that at all. We want everyone to be back to normal and believe it or not, hurricane work is not lucrative for all trades. You switch to service/repair orders that at best, 90% of these are minimum charges and it doesn't pay the bills or let us all drive home with Corvettes. Remember, that KBI doesn't advertise so all of the good companies in this town that do advertise had it probably 5 times worse than we did with calls.
I don't know how many times after the hurricane, that we saw a brand new box truck at the supply warehouse getting a brand new gutter machine on it. They were then asking the suppliers what they could charge for gutters. This is true, I know some won't believe this, but it is. And then after all of the easy work is done, they are now realizing that they are in over their heads and all that equipment now is for sale. This happens after every hurricane. All those companies are not coming back to do any kind of warranty work. I know this because we get the calls for that. "P**f" they are gone. I hate to say it but we know that many of these people are working unlicensed. I'll never stop or report someone that could be a Dad trying to feed his kids. But to those who know they are going to take the payment and be way far from here when you realized you messed up, I don't have any use for.
The answer is not what many think it is. How many of us hear "just hire more people"? That is a whole discussion to have for another day.
Stay safe all of you out there on roofs and in the heat. I know that no one asked for my opinion, however, I believe most of us agree to what I'm saying.
Stick with people that treat you like family if at all possible. Otherwise, you are just playing Roulette with your property.

Humbly,
Kevin-KBI

After a few years of our clients requesting, we provide this service, we have decided to start a service program for a "Home Watch" system that we can help keep an eye on our beloved properties while the owners are not in town. We are in the very beginning phase but with the help of our attorney and insurance company, we should be operational by the 1st of the year. We will have a system that "geo tracks" the inspector to show the date and time that they provided the service along with pictures taken of the areas of concern so the owner will feel more at ease about not being present to check themselves.

Many of our clients return from up north to find that there were some things out of sort while they were gone. We have many responses when they return due to clogged gutters, ripped screens, broken windows, water intrusion etc. that would have been easily handled if they knew about them while they were gone. Most of these things that need attention in these cases can be handled by KBI Industries because we are licensed to do so. We also have many contractors and roofers, plumbers, electricians that we deal with on a regular basis that we have had a relationship with for years. That kind of trust is valuable for situations that may come up. We do not want to take any work away from companies that already have a good relationship with their home watch company. There is enough work out there for everyone if it is done in an honest manner.
Anyone that would be providing the inspection would have a background screen but for a while, it will be me that provides this service. Then if there is a need to hire more people, more than likely it will be someone from our staff that we trust and have known for 4-12 years.

I will not be advertising this service. This is the only place that it will be mentioned. I only want to serve clients that know who we are and that trust us because of the relationship that we have had over the past 20 years. I'm not going to undercut any other company's pricing to gain clients and I will not actively steal customers from other companies. If you follow us, then you probably know that we can be trusted to provide this service for you if you need this. I'm going to keep the client list to a very small group for a while, on purpose, to make sure we have everything "dialed in" before growing. The only advertising that we do anymore is "word of mouth". If you think we are the right fit for you, family or friends. give us a shout.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us for the last 2 decades. I have met so many awesome people since we started this company. I for one am very grateful to all of you.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and prosperous new year!

We are almost back to 100%. We are very grateful for our loyal customers, friends and family for all the calls for service. When we finally had cable service for the phone lines and internet, the voice on the phone system said "You have...317 new voice mails" :)
It took me almost 2 days just to play the messages and get all the information down before we headed out to look at the requests. Remember, we don't advertise. I can't imagine what kind of call volume that all the other companies that do advertise are receiving. Right now we are in the "reactive" phase. So we aim to put back everyone that we can back to normal as fast as we possibly can. It may be a while. This means that for new customers that call for lesser priorities will be asked to postpone until we get our neighbors back to normal. We are working as hard and as fast as we can but it may take a minute to get to that place.
Joe Foronda is back with me again, part time when he's not at the Fire Station. That should help speed along the process. I promise to you we will get to everyone that calls and needs help. Thanks to everyone so far that have been so very patient with us. We will see you soon. Kevin-KBI
