Congratulations Mark Asturias for being honored this week with an Outstanding Public Service proclamation, presented by ICLT Board Chair and City of Irvine Vice-Mayor Tammy Kim on behalf of the City of Irvine. We bid farewell to Mark, our founding Executive Director, who is retiring after decades of dedicated service including stewardship of ICLT. During his tenure, ICLT oversaw the development of four rental properties and a for-sale townhome community as well as acquisition of other properties, creating nearly 500 additional affordable housing units in Irvine. The ICLT Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Billy Hughes as our new Executive Director – we look forward to the next level of our organization with Billy leading the charge.

For the 39th year, the Fair Housing Foundation encourages youth in grades 4 through 8 to explore the concept of housing as a right and to express their ideas through art as a part of the Fair Housing Poster contest. Students are invited to create a poster of any size around the theme “Fair Housing: My Right.” Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners who will be selected by participants of Virtual Fair Housing Month Celebrations. The deadline for submissions is April 20, 2023.

As we bid farewell to 2022, we also do so to Anthony Kuo, a steadfast and inspiring leader for the past two years on the ICLT board of directors. His leadership, this year as chair, has been a steadying force, setting a tone of professionalism and collaboration. His tenure – mostly during the throes of Covid-19 – saw development and opening of the Salerno affordable rental community as well as the planning, development and opening of Sage Park affordable homeownership community. Anthony’s work behind the scenes also was significant: traveling to Washington, D.C. to meet with legislators. He sought their help to have Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac provide mortgages to homeowners of community land trust properties. He also helped get the state Assembly Bill 2651 welfare exemption extension passed and signed by the governor. We’ve been honored to have been guided by his leadership and wish him many more successes in the future.

Congratulations to City of Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan for being sworn into a new term. It thrills us to hear that she and Vice Mayor Tammy Kim, Irvine Councilmember who is also an ICLT Board Member, identify affordable housing as one of their top priorities. We thank our outgoing chair Anthony Kuo for his dedication and service to ICLT and to the City of Irvine, helping ICLT launch its first affordable homeownership community, and for his efforts to help Irvine thrive for all residents. We are thrilled to announce that negotiations between the City of Irvine and a private property owner have secured 4 acres of land where ICLT will be able to develop future affordable housing. And the City will continue negotiations over the next several months to secure another 3-acre site. Stay tuned for more details which we will share in the near future!

Founded in 1979 by Sister Marie Therese, Lestonnac Free Clinic has grown from a single clinic in Orange to a network of satellite clinics which provide healthcare services to low-income an uninsured residents across Southern California. We appreciate them for the ways they help those more vulnerable and are pleased to thank them for providing a free vision clinic to all residents of our Salerno apartment community.

The good news is people from all backgrounds – government officials, developers, property owners and residents – are teaming up to look for ways to address these issues so new housing can be built and Orange County will continue to be a great place to live, work and play.
