How to group ornaments together so they look impressive.

Here are 8 ways to make your decorations really stand out.

Choose a theme
What is the theme of the room? If you don’t have a theme yet, you have a clean slate. What feel do you want in the room? What are your hobbies or interests? This could be a good starting point to give order to ornaments.
If you like all things contemporary, display items in fun geometric shapes mounted on a wall. If gardening is your favourite past time, a row of watering cans could give your house some character. Do you like an earthy look? A selection of vintage shoe forms could add visual interest to a coffee table.

The right spot
The right position will be determined by the purpose, size and number of items. A handful of items could work on a console, coffee or side table. Crockery might need a shelf, server or a display cabinet.

Beautiful ornaments
A group of ornaments look best if there are one or two beautiful signature pieces amongst them. Fill in the gaps with vases, books, frames or candlesticks. Books also help to add height and serve as a visual frame for vases or figurines.

Repetition
If items do not belong to a specific theme, create unity by repeating colour or texture, such as a display of rustic textures or gold ornaments.
Sometimes simplicity
More is not always better. For an uncluttered look, opt for minimalism; rather three big beautiful vases than a full shelf. White ornaments also have a calming effect on an interior.

Pairing
Using a pair of similar or identical items in a group, or as a standalone display, gives a sense of uniformity.

MONOCHROMATIC MAGIC - 5 top tips to a successful monochromatic scheme.

Choosing a colour scheme for your home is the one of the main design elements and, truthfully, can be rather daunting! Sometimes choosing one colour only and opting for a monochromatic scheme is the way to go. Not only is this a simple solution, but it will also create a stylish and elegant space!

1. Know your tones: When going monochromatic, you will be working with one colour only, but with many tones of that one colour. The tones will range from light to dark and will aid in creating interest in your colour scheme. Set the tone by choosing one tone that will be your main colour or wall paint and then work from there.

2. Pattern and texture are key: Your selection of patterns and textures will make or break your scheme. It is important that you carefully make your selection. This is the one time that there is no boundary for mix-and-match! Different textures and patterns will have their own tones and play along in your monochromatic scheme.

3. Complement with finishes: Your selection of finishes (i.e. woods, legs of chairs,
furniture pieces) must complement your scheme. Select a finish that will not overpower the tone but rather marry with it. If you have a blue scheme, then white finishes with silver will complement this as it is fresh and elegant! Finishes will not only complement your scheme but will break it up a bit which makes it more
interesting.

4. Mirror fun: Incorporating mirrors into your scheme is a fantastic touch! It creates a sense of depth and mystery and is the perfect reflector of your creation!

5. Every hue has its home: All hues have a home, never rule any of them out.

Maintain your gas braai for safety.

If you haven't yet fired up the gas braai, before you do here are some maintenance tips you should perform on a regular basis before lighting that flame. A seasonal maintenance check of your gas grill is essential for ensuring the safety of your family and your home.

Gas supply lines
Start by disconnecting the gas lines from the supply tanks. Most gas grills are fitted with rubber supply lines to deliver gas from the tank to the manifold - and from there to the burners. Over time, these rubber supply lines become brittle with age and neglect. While small cracks may be hard to spot, with the pipes removed you can give them a close inspection by hand. Any pipes that don't bend easily, or that feel brittle or hard have already started to deteriorate and need replacing.Any cracked or damaged pipes should be replaced immediately.

Inspect and clean
With the gas lines out of the way, you can do a thorough inspection to look around for anything that has come loose or is clogged up with grease and dirt. Give connectors and pans a good cleaning with a soft brush to removed grime.Old fat can easily ignite and cause a flash fire, which is catastrophic so close to gas lines.

Fuel safety check
Exploding gas tanks are like rockets and just because you can’t smell the gas doesn’t mean it isn’t leaking. Just like gas in the home, a leak can be extremely dangerous. To test for leaks on gas cylinders, fill a spray bottle with water and add a teaspoon of drops of dishwashing liquid. Sq**rt around the valve of the gas tank and then turn the gas on low. If any bubbles form around the valve this is an indication that you have a leak. Repeat this procedure around the regulator and at all other connection points.

Put all the gas lines back in position and tighten before testing.

It’s summertime and life is, (or should be) a garden in bloom! Spend time this month to keep on feeding fast-growing plants & lawns, and adding lots of summer colour to your garden beds. Make it a priority to pretty up your entertainment area or patio with containers filled with beautiful specimens & flowering plants.

Marigolds are surely the most cheerful & easy to grow summer annuals. They love heat & full sun and do not require a lot of water. Fertilise them monthly to induce a mass of blooms. There are different varieties of Marigolds and these are available in bright orange, yellow & red blooms. Use dwarf French Marigold varieties as companion plants in herb & veggie gardens to add colour to the foliage and to
fend off bugs.

Other annual seedlings to add to your ‘colouring in’ checklist are New Guinea Impatiens, Busy Lizzie Impatiens & Begonias for shade, and Sunpatiens, Vincas, Dianthus, Petunias, Salvias, Zinnias, Gazanias, Gypsophila, Alyssum, Celosia, Calibrachoa, Verbena & Portulaca for sun.

Plant more of the all-time favourites like Lavenders, Cupheas, Gauras, Angelonias, Agapanthus & Inca lilies – especially the dwarf & extremely prolific hybrids of the latter, which are perfect for container-growing too.

Lawn care
Pamper your lawn by feeding it with lawn fertiliser & water well before & afterwards. Maintenance includes regular mowing, taking care not to remove too much of the leaf blades. Continue to use selective herbicides to treat persistent patches of broad-leaf weeds if necessary.

Go potty!
Elegant containers are not only strong design features or focal elements in any garden, but also give those with very limited planting space a chance to garden in over-drive. Remember, the road to success relies on top quality soil medium for plants to grow in. Do not dig it up from the yard to save a few bucks! Rather use commercial potting soil which is free of weeds & soil pathogens.

Renting? Here are a few decorating tricks you should know

Make your temporary home a place you love living in.
Being a tenant in someone else’s home can often limit your ability to take on a couple of DIY projects in your space. Even though rentals can be a bit challenging at times, with their unattractive floors, outdated light fixtures and off-white walls, there are tons of ways to customise the space to your own style.
One thing that has annoyed a lot of renters is the landlord’s strict policy against drilling or knocking nails into the walls. So, for those of us who want to display our collection of art on the walls, or create shelving for all those extra kitchen spices and herbs, there is still a way to do so.

Ever heard of double sided tape?
It works miracles when it comes to light-weight mirrors and flat wooden shelving and will offer a temporary solution to your storage needs. Don’t get put off by the limitations, rather work with it than against it.

You don't have to hang your art
Lean large pieces of art against the wall or place them on windowsills or bookshelves. Their visibility does not depend on a permanent fixture to the wall.

Try removable wallpaper
If you’re feeling uninspired by the four walls surrounding you, dabble in the idea of removable wallpaper. Wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to make your rental stand out. You wouldn’t even need to use a lot, it’s the budget-friendly rental hero when it comes to décor. It will give the space a splash of colour, frame the room or add personality without damaging the surfaces.

Due to the high demand for accommodation in South Africa, especially in security estates, apartments and townhouse complexes have become increasingly popular.

Whether it’s a first home purchase or a decision to downscale, living in a small space poses some challenges. Here are some tips to overcome them …

Analyse the traffic flow in your apartment. A space will seem annoyingly small if you and your guests have to climb over furniture. Place furniture carefully to allow free access.

To create a visual perception of space, consider armless chairs and couches – they can adapt to different positions more easily than those with arms and they seem to take up less space while allowing the eye to cross the room.

Built-in cupboards offer much needed storage space. Install cupboards that reach to the ceiling to maximise space and avoid the dust traps found on the top. If a door gets in your way – consider taking it out. You can replace it with a sliding door or make the door space bigger, creating the illusion of one big space rather than two small ones.

Look at dropping your curtains from ceiling height rather than from just above the window. The added height will draw the eye upwards and will allow your fabric to drape perfectly.

While you're looking at the ceiling, it's worth investing in beautiful cornicing – the height of the detail will again draw the eye upwards, enhancing a spacious feel.

Perhaps one of the best ways of expanding a space visually is by introducing light. Mirrors, glass and reflective ornaments (like silver and crystal) expand light, making an area appear roomier.

Also consider your paint colours carefully, as lighter colours reflect light, while darker colours – perfect for accents – make a room seem small. Let as much sunshine in as possible – natural light will do you more favours than you realise!
