The perfect bedroom should almost be a version of a boutique hotel bedroom, where all your 'needs' and more than a few 'wants' are catered for. If you are looking to redesign your small bedroom and make this space a priority, we offer a few tips that will assist you in redesigning the space, whether your budget is small or you want to splurge and go for an all-out change.

1. Give it a new look
One of the ways to redesign a bedroom without spending a cent is simply changing the current layout of furniture in the bedroom.

Before you go ahead and do this, make sure to take everything out of the room. Emptying the room is a great way to sort through what is in there and whether or not it is needed - this decluttering process will clear the room of excess items and immediately give you more space to move and plan around.

2. Give the illusion of space
You need to use a few illusions or interior decorators’ magic tricks to make the room appear larger than it is. This is where mirrors come into play and can be used to lighten up a dark bedroom or visually enlarge the space. Placing a mirror opposite a window bounces light around the room and will instantly lift a dark bedroom - the bigger the mirror, the better.

3. Keep the colour scheme simple
In a small bedroom, it's easier to keep the colour palette as simple as possible with neutral hues and then adding a splash of colour with accessories.

4. Consider proportion
Too often, people tend to overlook the small size of a bedroom and buy furniture that is far too large for the space. While there's nothing wrong with wanting a king-size bed - is there enough space for it? Will there be any room left over for a bedside table or two?

5. Raise the bar around you
It's easy to only focus on the floor space around you - but don't forget it's possible to give your room a lift by opting for a hanging night stand, mounted shelving or floating bedside lighting.

So there you have it, you can still accessorise like you would a larger room, but keeping out the unnecessary clutter is a no-brainer - and keeping your room clean is another trick that won’t cost you any money.

Plants don’t just look great and add a natural feel to the home, some of them are good for your health too. Houseplants are great for boosting your mood, concentration, productivity and creativity. They’ve been known to reduce stress and assist with fatigue. They absorb toxins, increase humidity and produce oxygen.

Air purifying plants:
Air purifying plants ensure the air remains fresh and highly oxygenated. These plants do great in a bright, well lit home office where you need to exercise your brain power daily. One of our favourite air purifying plants is the Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana’, known as the prayer plant because it lies flat during the day and stands upright in the evenings. This plant is non-toxic for dogs and cats.

Humidity plants:
Humidity plants will add a boost of moisture to the air, ensuring your air and skin don’t get too dry. One of our favourite humidity plants is the ‘maidenhair fern’ and is also non-toxic for dogs and cats.

Productivity boosting plants:
Succulents have been known to give their owner’s little brain bursts. The University of Exeter released a study showing that employee productivity increased by 15% after plants were introduced to a bare office. One of our favourite succulents is the ‘string of bananas’. This trailing succulent with leaves that are shaped like bananas, needs plenty of bright sunlight. This plant is mildly toxic to dogs and cats.

Finding the perfect area rug is not an easy task.

If you make scale, style and function your top priorities while rug shopping, you will score a carpet that fits your design vision and household needs in no time.

Size Matters
A rug that's too small creates an unfinished, unsightly floating effect that detracts from the design. In contrast, a rug that’s too large for your space will make the room appear tight and overstuffed.

Your area rug should fit entirely or partially beneath all major furniture in the room. If you're working with a smaller area rug, position it at least halfway beneath all your key furnishings to create a cozy and secure floorplan. Pro tip: Layer your small area rug on a larger natural rug to yield curated, texture rich flooring that fits the scale of your design.

Be Selective
Ceilings are often called the “fifth wall” in design. Well, consider your area rug the sixth. Rugs are available in every colour, pattern and pile imaginable and their distinct motifs and colour stories are often synonymous with specific interior styles. Couple that with the fact that area rugs take up a lot of visual real estate in a room and it’s easy to see how a rug can influence the aesthetic of your space.

Fit Your Function
Every room has a distinct function, rhythm and level of foot traffic. All of these things must be considered when selecting the perfect area rug for your space.

Homes with muddy pawed pups and sticky fingered kiddos should choose a rug that can withstand the chaos of everyday life without falling apart after 6 months. Natural rugs (think: jute, sisal, seagrass) are great options for bustling areas. High-end area rugs with high-piles or woven from silk viscose make enviable additions to homes with lower foot traffic, calm pets and households with older children that are less prone to mess.

If you've ever fantasized about doing something a bit "unconventional" to your kitchen — say, covering the backsplashes in Moroccan tiles or installing a wood-fired pizza oven — you might want to reconsider. Interior designer Nate Berkus warns against investing in upgrades that reflect an overly-specific aesthetic. Below, Berkus shares which kitchen renovations increase your home's value.

WORTHWHILE UPGRADE: HIGH-END APPLIANCES
"The right appliance can make the space feel much more finished and expensive. Plus, they involve almost no construction but change the functionality 100-fold," says Berkus, who recommends going for ranges, refrigerators, cooktops, and other utilitarian devices with stainless steel finishes.

WORTHWHILE UPGRADE: NEUTRALS
Introducing a neutral colour palette for major surfaces like countertops and flooring might just be your biggest return on investment. "It sounds boring, but taste changes, and neutrals are much more universal," explains Berkus.

WORTHWHILE UPGRADE: A CHEF'S KITCHEN
"Everyone loves to mimic the kitchens they see on television cooking shows. With the increase of foodies and amateur chefs, we've seen that a conversion from an electric stove to a gas stove—in addition to a double-oven—is highly coveted."

WORTHWHILE UPGRADE: EXPANDING THE SPACE
"A larger kitchen is really what buyers are looking for when they're shopping for a house," says Berkus. He suggests knocking down a wall that separates an adjoining room, or creating the illusion of spaciousness by adding a window. "We live very differently now than how people lived when many of these homes were built, and these days, the kitchen is an all-encompassing space where everybody gathers."
