UPDATE| Early reports from Palestinian media have indicated that unidentified drones were spotted tracking the Sumud Freedom Flotilla in international waters, flying at medium altitude over several ships. This comes as boats across the globe join in to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza.

If you’re eyeing a R1 million loan with an interest rate of 11.75%, you might be wondering what your joint income should be to qualify. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you plan:

1. Loan Amount (Principal): R1,000,000

2. Interest Rate: 11.75% annually

3. Loan Term: 20 years

With these parameters, your estimated monthly repayment is around R10,862. Lenders typically use a debt-to-income ratio, often between 30% to 40%, to assess loan eligibility.

For a 30% ratio, you would need a joint gross monthly income of approximately R36,207 to qualify for this loan.

South Africa’s repo rate remains at 8.25%, keeping lending costs high, prime lending rate at 11.75%.

However, inflation has improved, dropping to 4.6% in July 2024, which brings a glimmer of relief to consumers.

Savers continue to benefit from better returns, but the South African Reserve Bank maintains a cautious stance.

While some officials believe inflation has improved enough to consider rate cuts, a reduction in the repo rate may only be likely if inflation expectations align more closely with the 4.5% target in the near future.

So, keep an eye on economic updates for potential changes.
